Capital-embodied technical change and the productivity growth slowdown in Canada by Surendra Gera( Book )

8 editions published in 1998 in English and French and held by 95 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Previous empirical studies on productivity growth have been inconclusive in identifying the causes of the slowdown since 1973. The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding of the causes of the slowdown by estimating the effects of capital-embodied technical change (the vintage effect, whereby old capital in mature industries is less productive than new capital) on productivity growth in Canada. It examines the implications of 3 issues for the slowdown: whether the vintage effect is an important factor; the implications of the "catch-up" effect for Canadian industries; the impact of growth in the capital-labour ratio. The study describes the empirical model, gives data & basic statistics & then provides the empirical analysis. Finally, it identifies sources of productivity slowdown
