Shakespeare's Sonnets by William Shakespeare( Book )

37 editions published between 1996 and 2012 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,049 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This new edition focuses on the Sonnets as poetry - sometimes strikingly individual poems, but often subtly interlinked in thematic, imagistic and other groupings. Gwynne Evans and Anthony Hecht also address the many questions that cast a veil of mystery over the genesis of the Sonnets: to what extent are they autobiographical? What is the nature of the 'love', strongly expressed, between the 'poet', the 'youth' and the 'Dark Lady'? Can they, apart from the poet, be Identified? Who is the 'rival poet'? When were the Sonnets written and in what order? What were the circumstances surrounding their publication?

The tragedy of Richard the Third by William Shakespeare( Book )

5 editions published between 1959 and 1967 in English and held by 181 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Shakespeare's Richard III presents difficult textual problems. There are some 2,000 verbal differences between the text of the first quarto (1597) and the version in the First Folio (1623). Although the narrative of the two plays is virtually identical, each has lines which are not found in the other, parts of the play are arranged differently and the quarto deploys fewer characters." "In the past editors have based an analysis of the quarto text on its conjectural relationship with the Folio. In this edition Peter Davison examines every quarto reading to establish a presumption of originality. He proposes that Shakespeare's company, the Lord Chamberlain's Men, used a memorially reconstructed text of Richard III during a touring performance of the play, and that text provided the manuscript for the 1597 quarto. A lengthy introduction sets out the problem and the proposed solution. The text of the quarto is accompanied by a collation of variant readings and substantial textual notes." "An important element of this edition is the history of what happened to the text on tour. Using examples of touring practice of the past 400 years, the introduction shows how the actors' involvement helped to produce the text we have."--Jacket
