Emil Schulthess, 1913 in Zürich geboren, zählt zu den grossen Schweizer Fotografen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Während seiner Grafikerlehre besuchte er die von Hans Finsler geleitete Fotoklasse an der Kunstgewerbeschule Zürich. Nach Studienaufenthalten in Paris arbeitete er als Grafiker in Zürich. Von 1941 bis 1957 prägte er als Art Director das Gesicht der Kulturzeitschrift 'Du'. Im Auftrag der Zeitschrift reiste er 1953 quer durch die Vereinigten Staaten. Aus der Fülle seiner Aufnahmen entstand 1955 sein erster grosser Bildband 'usa' mit spektakulären Fotografien in Farbe und Schwarz-Weiss. Seine Bücher über die Antarktis, Afrika, die Sowjetunion oder China gehörten zu den populärsten Bildbänden ihrer Zeit, in der Schweiz ebenso wie im Ausland. Zum 100. Geburtstag von Emil Schulthess würdigt die Fotostiftung Schweiz dessen Beitrag zur schweizerischen wie zur internationalen Fotografie in Form einer retrospektiven Ausstellung.0Exhibition: Fotostiftung Schweiz, Zürich, Switzerland (7.9.13-23.2.2014)
