"In this striking chronicle, the American Civil War comes to life through the lenses of such extraordinary photographers as Alexander Gardner, Timothy O'Sullivan, Jay D. Edwards, J.W. Petty, A.J. Russell, Mathew Brady and his numerous assistants, and scores of others. Found in attics, old albums, on forgotten shelves in libraries and archives, the images of real faces and places reveal the underlying drama, tragedies, and pain of a war that split one nation into two. Essays by eminent Civil War scholars and the entertaining, informative captions accompanying each picture highlight the viewpoints of citizens and soldiers often neglected in history texts and illuminate in detail the nature of Civil War leadership and command, the spirit of the individual regiments, the role of the oft-forgotten navies on both sides, and the continental scope of the war and its impact on the land and on communities large and small"--Cover

Early photography at Gettysburg by
William A Frassanito(
Book
)
5 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 289 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book is the best and most complete study of Gettysburg photography. It is the long-awaited companion to Gettysburg: A Journey in Time. In the 20 years since Journey, Frassanito has uncovered many more never-before published photos of people and places significant to Gettysburg's early history as well as new information on commonly known photos, presented in a clear format. One of the greatest battlefields in the world was documented when the field still looked essentially as it did at the time of the battle. Frassanito focuses on the period between 1859 and 1869, a period that begins with the earliest outdoor photograph known to have been recorded in the town, through the photographic series which comprised the last substantial postwar coverage of the field itself before the memorial craze adorned the area with monuments and avenues. - Publisher

Days of darkness : the Gettysburg civilians(

)
1 edition published in 2005 in English and held by 68 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Gettysburg was the most famous battle of the American Civil War. History forgot one of the battle's chapters: how the citizens of Gettysburg fared during the three days of battle. Re-live their experiences through diaries, photographs and factual re-enactments. They never expected the war to come to their town, but when it did, the residents of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania became heroes. Some townsmen, including seventy-year-old John Burns, joined the fight, while others struggled to help the thousands of soldiers wounded during the three day battle. In aftermath, 50,000 lay dead, and the once quiet lives of the citizens of Gettysburg would never be the same
