An investigation of the laws of thought : on which are founded the mathematical theories of logic and probabilities by George Boole( Book )

107 editions published between 1854 and 2012 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,669 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An Investigation of the Laws of Thought on Which are Founded the Mathematical Theories of Logic and Probabilities, was an influential 19th century book by George Boole, the second of his two monographs on algebraic logic. It was published in 1854. Boole was Professor of Mathematics of then Queen's College, Cork in Ireland
A treatise on the calculus of finite differences by George Boole( Book )

70 editions published between 1860 and 2003 in English and held by 1,021 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Written by a great English mathematician, this classic text begins with the differences of elementary functions and explores interpolation, mechanical quadrature, finite integration, and the summation of series. Several useful tests for the convergence and divergence of series are developed, as is a method for finding the limits of error in series expansions. The latter half of the book discusses difference-equations, including linear, mixed, and partial difference-equations, and concludes with applications to problems in geometry and optics. The text pays particular attention to the connection of the calculus of finite differences with the differential calculus, and more than 200 problems appear in the text (some with solutions). Unabridged republication of the classic 1872 edition
The mathematical analysis of logic being an essay towards a calculus of deductive reasoning by George Boole( Book )

82 editions published between 1847 and 2015 in 3 languages and held by 952 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Self-taught mathematician George Boole (1815-1864) published a pamphlet in 1847 - The Mathematical Analysis of Logic - that launched him into history as one of the nineteenth century's most original thinkers. In the introduction, Boole closely adheres to two themes: the fundamental unity of all science and the close relationship between logic and mathematics. In the first chapter, he examines first principles of formal logic, and then moves on to Aristotelian syllogism, hypotheticals, and the properties of elective functions. Boole uses this pamphlet to answer a well-known logician of the day, Sir William Hamilton, who believed that only philosophers could study 'the science of real existence', while all mathematicians could do was measure things. In essence, The Mathematical Analysis of Logic humbly chides Hamilton and asks him to rethink his bias. Boole is compelling reading for anyone interested in intellectual history and the science of the mind
A treatise on differential equations by George Boole( Book )

113 editions published between 1859 and 2015 in 3 languages and held by 877 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

There is an aspect of Boole's work that is not closely related to his treatises in logic or the theory of sets but which is familiar to every student of differential equations. This is the algorithm of differential operators, which he introduced to facilitate the treatment of linear differential equations. If, for example, we wish to solve the differential equation ay + by + cy = 0, the equation is written in the notation (aD2 + bD + c)y = 0. Then, regarding D as an unknown quantity rather than an operator, we solve the algebraic quadratic equation aD2 + bD + c = 0. There are many other situations in which Boole, in his Treatise on Differential Equations of 1859, pointed out parallels between the properties of the differential operator (and its inverse) and the rules of algebra. British mathematicians in the second half of the nineteenth century were thus again becoming leaders in algorithmic analysis, a field in which, fifty years earlier, they had been badly deficient

Studies in logic and probability by George Boole( Book )

38 editions published between 1945 and 2012 in English and held by 617 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From one of the founders of symbolic logic comes this collection of writings on logical subjects and related questions of probability. George Boole invented Boolean logic, the basis of modern digital computer logic, for which he is regarded as a founder of the field of computer science. This authoritative compilation of his papers features his most mature thinking on Boolean logic and includes previously unpublished material. Appropriate for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students, the contents range from The Mathematical Analysis of Logic to Boole's final works, including The Laws of Thought, the most systematic statement of his ideas on logic and probability. Boole had intended to create a follow-up volume but did not survive to fulfill his ambition; this volume features his further studies on the subject

"This groundbreaking work on logic by the brilliant nineteenth-century English mathematician George Boole (1815-1864) remains influential to this day. Boole's major contribution was to demonstrate conclusively that the symbolic expressions of algebra could be adapted to convey the fundamental principles and operations of logic, which hitherto had been expressed only in words. Boole was thus the founder of today's science of symbolic logic."--Jacket

George Boole : selected manuscripts on logic and its philosophy by George Boole( Book )

10 editions published between 1997 and 2014 in English and German and held by 61 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

George Boole (1815-1864) is well known to mathematicians for his research and textbooks on the calculus, but his name has spread world-wide for his innovations in symbolic logic and the development and applications made since his day. The utility of "Boolean algebra" in computing has greatly increased curiosity in the nature and extent of his achievements. His work is most accessible in his two books on logic, "A mathematical analysis of logic" (1947) and "An investigation of the laws of thought" (1954). But at various times he wrote manuscript essays, especially after the publication of the second book; several were intended for a non-technical work, "The Philosophy of logic", which he was not able to complete. This volume contains an edited selection which not only relates them to Boole's publications and the historical context of his time, but also describes their strange history of family, followers and scholars have treid to confect an edition. The book will appeal to logicians, mathematicians and philosophers, and those interested in the histories of the corresponding subjects; and also students of the early Victorian Britain in which they were written
