Tra i due si instaura una relazione di intima amicizia che si trasforma, poco per volta, in una storia d'amore. Harold ammira di Maude la curiosa vitalità, la voglia di lasciare un'impronta sul mondo, Maude apprezza del ragazzo la raffinata intelligenza. Intanto la madre, convinta che Harold possa guarire dalle sue fissazioni solo sposandosi, invita a casa alcune ragazze-bene della città nella speranza che il figlio si innamori di una di loro. L'accoglienza di Harold è a dir poco ostile: davanti alle coetanee egli simula assassini, suicidi, sanguinose amputazioni di arti. Le sue attenzioni, invece, sono rivolte totalmente a Maude: grazie a lei impara a divertirsi, ad apprezzare il lato bello del mondo, a ridere e scherzare. Un giorno, Maude decide che è venuto il momento di togliersi la vita come estremo segno di libertà. Harold assiste impotente e terrorizzato al gesto della donna, vorrebbe imitarla, ma comprende che è un altro l'insegnamento che l'anziana donna gli ha lasciato in eredità: la consapevolezza che vale la pena vivere la propria vita fino alla vecchiaia
