Canada-U.S. tax comparisons by John B Shoven( )

11 editions published between 1992 and 2007 in English and held by 957 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In the increasingly global economy, domestic tax policies have taken on a new importance for international economics. This unique volume compares the tax reform experiences of Canada and the United States, two countries with the world's largest bilateral flow of trade and investment."--BOOK JACKET. "With the signing of the U.S.-Canada Free Trade Agreement and the tax reforms of the 1980s, there has been some harmonization of tax systems. But geographic, cultural, and political characteristics shape distinct national social policies that may impede harmonization. As the U.S. and Canadian economies become even more integrated, differences in tax systems will have important effects, in particular on the relative rates of economic growth. Scholars from both countries examine the extent to which conformity between these national programs has taken place, focusing on tax reforms of the 1980s, and assess the effects over the long term."--BOOK JACKET. "The authors carefully consider the policy environment in which social programs are established and implemented, including such aspects as property rights, incentive structures, the degree and kind of economic freedoms, and the systems of private and public decision making. By comparing these environments, the authors show that certain aspects of the tax systems of Canada and the United States are converging, while in other respects they are diverging. For instance, both countries exhibit similar corporate tax structures and income tax systems, but they have very different approaches to sales taxes and social security taxes."--BOOK JACKET. "Another interesting conclusion from these investigations is that although tax policies differ, outcomes are often quite similar. For example, they generate roughly the same amounts of revenue, produce similar costs of capital, and produce comparable distributions of income."--BOOK JACKET. "The methodology and results of this research will have significant implications for the analysis and development of trade policies among other nations, as well as for understanding domestic social policy in a global economy."--BOOK JACKET

"This volume deals with new developments in applied general equilibrium, a field that has broadened greatly since the 1980s. The contributors discuss some traditional as well as some newer topics in the field, including nonconvexities in economy-wide models, tax policy, developmental modeling, and energy modeling. The book also covers a range of new approaches, conceptual issues, and computational algorithms, such as calibration, and new areas of application, such as the macroeconomics of real business cycles and finance. An introductory chapter written by the editors maps out issues and scenarios for the future evolution of applied general equilibrium."--BOOK JACKET

Canada-United States free trade by Royal Commission on the Economic Union and Development Prospects for Canada( Book )

8 editions published in 1985 in English and held by 326 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This volume contains the research papers which have been commissioned by the Research Advisory Group on Trade Policy (Economics) on the issues surrounding a possible Canada-U.S. free trade agreement. The papers are of three types: commissioned research studies, staff papers which summarize the proceedings of three research symposia, and a selection of the papers presented at these symposia. At each symposium, participants were invited to present short papers based on their existing work relevant to the issues being discussed. Many of these proved to be extremely helpful both to the Commission staff and to Commissioners in drawing together the thinking of the wider research community on issues surrounding Canada-U.S. free trade. Therefore, slightly longer and revised versions of some of these have been included here to help focus the debate which we expect will follow publication of the Commission's report and research output."--Page 1

UK tax policy and applied general equilibrium analysis by John Piggott( Book )

16 editions published between 1985 and 2009 in English and held by 296 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

At the time of this volume's publication in 1985, general equilibrium modelling had become a significant area of applied economic research. Its focus was to develop techniques to facilitate economy-wide quantitative assessment of allocative and distributional impacts on policy changes. UK Tax Policy and Applied General Equilibrium Analysis was the first book-length treatment of the development and application of an applied general equilibrium model of the Walrasian type, constructed to analyse UK taxation and subsidy policy. As a whole, UK Tax Policy and Applied General Equilibrium Analysis offers the reader two things. First, it gives a detailed account of the development of an applied general equilibrium model of the UK. Second, it provides results of model experiments which have been designed to inform the policy debate, not only in the UK but also in other countries. It should thus be of interest to both researchers and students undertaking research in the applied general equilibrium area and to policy makers concerned with tax reform
Environmental issues in the new world trading system by Peter Uimonen( Book )

It analyses the use of environmentally-motivated trade policies, national environmental policies, and their relationships with the rules governing trade, critically examining proposals rule reform. A theoretical framework is provided for a consideration of the efficiency of environmental trade policies and an evaluation made of empirical links between environmental policy differences and trade flows. Concerns of developing countries over environmentally-motivated market access restrictions are highlighted in considering international trade rules and the agreements reached at UNCED

6 editions published in 1985 in English and held by 271 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The present day multilateral trading system is largely based upon the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. The GATT contains a series of principles which guide the conduct of trade policy in member countries. The broad objective is to achieve a liberal world trading order based on clear rules firmly adhered to and trade measures which are both visible and transparent."--Preface
Canadian trade policies and the world economy by John Whalley( Book )

7 editions published between 1982 and 1985 in English and held by 269 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Canada is a relatively small, open economy with a large amount of foreign trade relative to its gross national product. The majority of that trade - over 70 percent - is with the United States. Policies that either limit or encourage foreign trade are therefore more important for Canada than for many other countries."--
