American opera by Elise K Kirk( Book )

10 editions published between 2001 and 2005 in English and held by 905 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"From the spectacle and melodrama of William Dunlap's Pizarro, in Peru (1800) and the pathos of Caryl Florio's Uncle Tom's Cabin (1882) to the chilling psychological drama of Jack Beeson's Lizzie Borden (1965) and the lyric elegance of John Corigliano's The Ghosts of Versailles (1991), opera in America displays the energy and diversity of the nation itself. Kirk shows that this rich, varied repertoire includes far more than the familiar jewels Porgy and Bess, Candide, Susannah, and The Consul."--Jacket

Harry Truman, the man--his music by B. F Lingham( Book )

1 edition published in 1985 in English and held by 70 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Most of us may think we know Harry S. Truman, that almost legendary president who guided the nation through the final days of World War II. There was another side to harry Truman, however, that has suffered an ill-deserved neglect. Harry Truman loved music. He particularly loved the great classical composers, but melodic popular songs, folk ditties and tuneful musical shows all found a place in his heart. This book can but skim the surface of the depth of Truman's musical life, but it gives a pleasurable view of this bluntly honest, forthright man who reluctantly became President of the United States and who never, throughout his whole life, allowed a musical moment to escape him

Materials include correspondence, minutes, reports, memoranda, conference materials, bylaws, handbooks, committee records, publicity and promotional materials, financial papers, materials related to its publications American music and Sonneck Society bulletin, photographs and realia. The Administrative Papers series forms the bulk of the collection and is divided into the following ten subseries: Officers and Offices; Meetings: Minutes and Reports; Annual Conferences and Special Meetings; Standing Committees; Ad Hoc Committees; Appointments; Interest Groups; Brochures, Leaflets and Pamphlets; Stationery and Letterhead; and Miscellany. The Publications series includes files relating to both the quarterly journal American music and the Sonneck Society bulletin (previously named the Sonneck Society newsletter). Files from the first four editors of American music, Allen Britton, John Graziano, Wayne Shirley, and Josephine Wright, as well as those from book review editors Frank J. and Wilma Reid Cipolla, and record review editor and discographer Don Roberts, are present. There is extensive correspondence among editors, contributors, reviewers, the editorial board, the University of Illinois Press, and members of the Sonneck Society. The papers may also include abstracts, drafts, final versions, or revisions of articles and reviews, and accompanying materials. The Sonneck Society bulletin materials contain working papers for each issue of the bulletin, spanning 1987-1992. There are considerable materials on book and record reviews. The Photographs series mostly contains snapshots taken by attendees at conferences, but also includes a small amount of miscellaneous photographs, including a 1983 formal photograph of attendees at the Keele conference and photographs of Oscar Sonneck.
