The new American reality : who we are, how we got here, where we are going by Reynolds Farley( Book )

13 editions published between 1996 and 1998 in English and held by 960 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The social trends that have so transformed the nation were kindled in the 1960s, a watershed decade for American civil rights. The New American Reality describes the activism, federal policies, and legal victories that eliminated overt racism and sexual discrimination. But along with open doors came new challenges: divorce and out-of-wedlock births grew commonplace, increasing women's chances of falling into poverty; residential segregation, inadequate schooling, and a high ratio of female-headed families severely impaired the economic progress of African Americans; and a new wave of immigration rapidly altered the nation's ethnic composition. In the 1970s, global economic restructuring shifted the nation's dominant industry from manufacturing to services, and a new emphasis on technology and cost cutting created demand for more sophisticated skills in the workplace

Recent trends in school segregation and enrollment by race : an analysis of new data from the Office of Civil Rights : final report by Reynolds Farley( Book )

7 editions published in 1981 in English and held by 64 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report on enrollment trends and racial composition in 116 central city school districts is based on a series of surveys conducted from 1967 to 1978. Extensive statistical data describe trends in: the segregation of black, white and Hispanic students; the racial and ethnic representation of teachers; school integration; and white enrollment trends, such as "white flight." The data suggest that: (1) racial segregation declined in all types of central city school districts, but decreases were least in large cities and greatest in the county-wide districts; (2) Spanish students were less segregated from white students than from black students, and black-white segregation (assessed by the index of dissimilarity) decreased more than did Spanish-black or Spanish-white segregation; (3) racial discrepancy between students and staff was considerably greater in the North and West than in the South; and (4) when desegregation occurs, loss of white enrollment increases during the first year of integration but the increased outflow is not maintained in subsequent years.
