Gilbert's fantastical plots together with Sullivan's inventive settings have come to epitomise much of what we consider to be British culture in the 19th century. Indeed, so great was this institution that The D'Oyly Carte Opera Company is still performing the operettas of Gilbert and Sullivan today, and so are many other companies, both amateur and professional. These excerpts, from 1948?1954, are recorded as they were originally intended, in the great tradition of The D'Oyly Carte Opera Company

The cheap tailor Ko-Ko was deemed Lord High Executioner under remarkable circumstances and faces a great challenge when the Mikado, Emperor of Japan, sends notice that if an execution does not take place within the month, the Town of Titipu will be dishonored and Ko-Ko himself will lose his head. The situation is complicated when Ko-Ko claims to have executed a wandering minstrel who turns out to be the Mikado's son; and to save the lives of his friends and himself, he must win the hand of the sadistic, unattractive Katisha. The opera is considered Gilbert and Sullivan's best work, and never ceases to amaze new generations
