The mathematical genius Alan Turing (19121954) was one of the greatest scientists and thinkers of the 20th century. Now well known for his crucial wartime role in breaking the ENIGMA code, he was the first to conceive of the fundamental principle of the modern computerthe idea of controlling a computing machine's operations by means of a program of coded instructions, stored in the machine's 'memory'. In 1945 Turing drew up his revolutionary design for an electronic computing machinehis Automatic Computing Engine ('ACE'). A pilot model of the ACE ran its first program in 1950 and the production version, the 'DEUCE', went on to become a cornerstone of the fledgling British computer industry. The first 'personal' computer was based on Turing's ACE. This book describes Turing's struggle to build the modern computer. The first detailed history of Turing's contributions to computer science, this text is essential reading for anyone interested in the history of the computer and the history of mathematics. It contains first hand accounts by Turing and by the pioneers of computing who worked with him. As well as relating the story of the invention of the computer, the book clearly describes the hardware and software of the ACEincluding the very first computer programs. The book is intended to be accessible to everyone with an interest in computing, and contains numerous diagrams and illustrations as well as original photographs. The book contains some previously unpublished work by Turing as well as data that has only recently been declassified, and there are in addition chapters describing Turing's pathbreaking research in the fields of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Artificial Life (ALife). The book has an extensive system of hyperlinks to The Turing Archive for the History of Computing, an online library of digital facsimiles of typewritten documents by Turing and the other scientists who pioneered the electronic computer

Mathematical Logic is a collection of the works of one of the leading figures in 20thcentury science. This collection of A.M. Turing's works is intended to include all his mature scientific writing, including a substantial quantity of unpublished material. His work in pure mathematics and mathematical logic extended considerably further; the work of his last years, on morphogenesis in plants, is also of the greatest originality and of permanent importance. This book is divided into three parts. The first part focuses on computability and ordinal logics and covers Turing's work between 1937 and 1938. The second part covers type theory; it provides a general introduction to Turing's work on type theory and covers his published and unpublished works between 1941 and 1948. Finally, the third part focuses on enigmas, mysteries, and loose ends. This concluding section of the book discusses Turing's Treatise on the Enigma, with excerpts from the Enigma Paper. It also delves into Turing's papers on programming and on minimum cost sequential analysis, featuring an excerpt from the unpublished manuscript. This book will be of interest to mathematicians, logicians, and computer scientists

"Alan Turing, pioneer of computing and World War II codebreaker, was one of the most important and influential thinkers of the twentieth century. The astonishing output of his tragically short life included the universal Turing Machine (the theoretical foundation of all modern computing), the electromechanical 'bombes' used at Bletchley Park to decipher the Enigma code, his groundbreaking design for an electronic storedprogramme computer, and work on artificial intelligence and artificial life so revolutionary that he can claim to be the founding father of these disciplines. In this book, Turing's key writings in all these subjects are made easily accessible for the first time. Lectures, scientific papers, top secret wartime material, correspondence, and broadcasts are introduced and set in context by Jack Copeland, Director of the Turing Archive for the History of Computing."BOOK JACKET

"On Computable Numbers, with an Application to the Entscheidungsproblem", Alan Turing's paper of 1937, contained his thesis that every effective computation can be programmed on such an automation as that called Turing machine. Furthermore it proved the unsolvability of the halting problem and of the decision problem for first order logic, and it presented the invention of the universal Turing machine. It is that publication that will presumably be acknowledged as marking sub specie aeternitatis the beginning of the "computer age". This volume recognizes the still continuing influence of the Turing machine concept by collecting contributions from international specialists in logic, computability, mathematics, biology, physics, linguistics, and cognitive science, thus signalling the exceptionally wide scope of that concept
