It tells the story of Josef Bloch, a goalkeeper who lets in an easy goal and, having been suspended, wanders the streets of Vienna losing his sense of reality. He picks up a movie cashier, spends the night with her and in the morning, with no motive, strangles her. He escapes and hides out in a remote village on the Austro-Hungarian border, passively waiting as the police dragnet, about which he reads in the newspapers, slowly closes in on him
