Lessons from a child : on the teaching and learning of writing by Lucy Calkins( Book )

5 editions published in 1983 in English and held by 740 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Drawn from a larger study involving 16 children and 7 classrooms at a New Hampshire elementary school, this book presents a case study of one child's growth in writing during third and fourth grade. The first section of the book describes the inception of the writing workshop in one classroom, including the partnership between the researcher implementing the workshop and the classroom teacher, the use of teacher editing at the end of the writing process rather than sooner, and the teacher's role as she took over a child-centered workshop in an otherwise traditional classroom curriculum. The second section of the book focuses on the writing development of one student, including the child's gradual grasp of the revision process, her development of the writer's "executive" or reader's function, and her mastery of writing and revision strategies. The third section of the book deals with the writing classroom as a context for growth, specifically how a different classroom teacher approached the workshop model with an emphasis on peer interaction during the writing process, how the child's writing reflected her changing concept of what good writing was, and how reading and writing can be integrated to further children's writing development. Now, with Pathways to the Common Core, they are ready to help you find your way. Designed for teachers, school leaders, and professional learning communities looking to navigate the gap between their current literacy practices and the ideals of the Common Core, Pathways to the Common Core will help you: understand what the standards say, suggest, and what they don't say; recognize the guiding principles that underpin the reading and writing standards; identify how the Common Core's infrastructure supports a spiraling K-12 literacy curriculum; and scrutinize the context in which the CCSS were written and are being unrolled. In addition to offering an analytical study of the standards, this guide will also help you and your colleagues implement the standards in ways that lift the level of teaching and learning throughout your school.--

And after thirty years of studying her students' growth in the writing workshop, Lucy Calkins knows one of the most powerful ways to support good writers: clear, purposeful writing conferences." "In One to One Calkins and her colleagues Amanda Hartman and Zoe White show you the practices and principles that create effective conferences.
