Dictee by Theresa Hak Kyung Cha( Book )

25 editions published between 1982 and 2018 in 4 languages and held by 580 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Dictee is the best-known work of the versatile and important Korean American artist Theresa Hak Kyung Cha. A classic work of autobiography that transcends the self, Dictee is the story of several women: the Korean revolutionary Yu Guan Soon, Joan of Arc, Demeter and Persephone, Cha's mother Hyung Soon Huo (a Korean born in Manchuria to first-generation Korean exiles), and Cha herself. The elements that unite these women are suffering and the transcendence of suffering. The book is divided into nine parts structured around the Greek Muses. Cha deploys a variety of texts, documents, images, and forms of address and inquiry to explore issues of dislocation and the fragmentation of memory. The result is a work of power, complexity, and enduring beauty

Mouth to mouth by Theresa Hak Kyung Cha( Visual )

4 editions published in 1975 in English and held by 14 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

English and Korean words appear on the screen, a mouth forms the shape of an "O," then opens and closes. Is this the beginning of language? In this early videotape, Cha isolates and repeats a simple, physical act - a mouth forming the eight Korean vowel graphemes - so that this ordinary action becomes something primal and riveting

"The two super-8 mm films, projected onto the wall at 18 fps, show through time-lapse photography subtle changes in the definition and articulation of the composition. The videotape seen on the monitor involves text and still images dissolving into one another. Cha's distinctive voice-over, with its delicate, deliberate phrases in French and English, evokes a further poetic relationship between the meanings of different languages and images."--John G.
