Die 3 Messen = The masses = Les messes by Anton Bruckner( Recording )

17 editions published between 1963 and 1995 in 5 languages and held by 505 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Parsifal : [ein Bühnenweihfestspiel] by Richard Wagner( Recording )

42 editions published between 1970 and 2002 in 4 languages and held by 476 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Wagner's mystical opera makes extraordinary demands on the conductor, but James Levine is renowned for the special affection and authority he brings to this transcendent work. The music shimmers and glows, evoking the legendary world of the Knights of the Holy Grail and the pure fool who brings healing power to the land. Peter Hofmann stars as the questing title hero, Jerome Hines sings the wise old man, Gurnemanz, and Mignon Dunn is the voluptuous Kundry, whose erotic temptations almost ensnare the young hero
Palestrina : [musikalische Legende in drei Akten] by Hans Pfitzner( )

35 editions published between 1973 and 2009 in 4 languages and held by 438 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Palestrina is claimed to have 'saved the arts of counterpoint and polyphony' in the face of a Papal edict that church music must be more traditional and revert to plainsong. Palestrina produces a work that contains all the 'modern' and 'sinful' musical styles the Pope disapproves of. Upon hearing the work, the Pope and Palestrina's arch critic, Archbishop Borromeo relents

Siegfried by Richard Wagner( )

23 editions published between 1968 and 2005 in 3 languages and held by 350 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is one of the legendary performances from the Met's vast archive of historic broadcasts. The incomparable Lauritz Melchior stars in the title role of the young hero who sets out to explore the world--killing the fierce dragon Fafner (Eduard Habich) and the evil dwarf Mime (Karl Laufkötter) along the way. When Wotan (the great Friedrich Schorr) tries to stop him, Siegfried uses his sword to break the god's spear and makes his way to the sleeping Brünnhilde (a radiant Kirsten Flagstad). He awakens her with a kiss--and sets in motion the events that, in the following opera, will bring about the end of the world. Kerstin Thorborg co-stars as Erda and Artur Bodanzky conducts

In an effort to hasten the prophecy, he and Lady Macbeth plot the murders of those in the way. Under the strain of the heinous crimes, Lady Macbeth dies and Macbeth edges toward insanity. In the tragic climax, Macbeth is killed in a duel and Malcolm becomes king

Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss( )

25 editions published between 1970 and 2008 in 3 languages and held by 315 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Karl Bohm's only studio version of the work was recorded in 1958. When Deutsche Grammophon originally planned to record the work, there were already two rival versions on the market: the Decca recording under Erich Kleiber and EMI's version under Herbert von Karajan. Karajan's recording was made in December 1956 and should have included Irmgard Seefried as Octavian and Rita Streich as Sophie, but in both cases cast changes became necessary: Seefried was replaced by the young Christa Ludwig, and pregnancy forced Rita Streich to withdraw. As a result, Deutsche Grammophon was able to use both these singers for its own recording exactly two years later. It boasts a wonderful cast, with the full-throated Marianne Schech as the Marschallin, Irmgard Seefried bringing a range of colour to the 'trouser' role of Octavian, Rita Streich light and exquisite as Sophie, and a rounded, lyrical portrait of Faninal from Fischer-Dieskau. The recording also reunited Bohm with his 'old' orchestra, the Dresden Staatskapelle, an orchestra often referred to as the Zauberharfe or Magic Harp for the fluent and airborne quality of its sound

Die Walküre by Richard Wagner( )

6 editions published between 1997 and 2012 in German and held by 295 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Wagner's powerful and wrenching tale of ill-fated love requires a cast of great singing actors, and that's just what this broadcast provides. Jon Vickers and Régine Crespin are the brother and sister who fall rapturously in love, only to be torn apart by death. The legendary Birgit Nilsson sings Brünnhilde, the Valkyrie of the title who is punished by her father (the magnificent Theo Adam as Wotan) for doing what he really wants her to do. Herbert von Karajan conducts his final Met performance
Der Freischutz by Carl Maria von Weber( )

15 editions published between 1991 and 2008 in 4 languages and held by 268 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Wagner said this early-Romantic gem was the most German of German operas. Its irresistible mix of colorful folklore, the spooky supernatural, a tender romance, and the passionate struggle between good and evil are all captured in Weber's tuneful and dramatic score. The cast in this rare U.S. performance is sensational: Sándor Kónya as our hero, the forester Max, who must win a shooting contest in order to marry his beloved Agathe (the ravishing Pilar Lorengar), despite the dark plotting of Caspar (Gerd Feldhoff)
