"Robert Redfield's fresh approach to community studies added new dimensions to social anthropology. This early work indicates the broad and humanistic outlook which was always to distinguish the great social scientist's thought. The physical, social, and spiritual life of this Mayan community are blended together in a book that was, and remains, important for anthropologists and interesting to the general reader."-- Back cover

"A major set of the essays in this volume relates to the broad subject of social science in society. Redfield conceived of social science as an institutionalized set of activities, with a structure of their own and assumptions and methods which have significant implications for social life. He gave himself the task of stating as simply and clearly as possible just what are the characterisitics of social science when looked at from this point of view, its justification in the social order, its relations to other kinds of scholarly activities, and the standards which a social scientist should set himself if he wishes to do his work well. These essays were given as lectures in Germany not long after the end of the war, when German Social Science had hardly recovered its pose and strength and when American and British social scientists were searching their minds as to where lay their responsibilities for future developments."-- Introduction
