Crime and justice in the United States and in England and Wales, 1981-96 by Patrick A Langan( Book )

8 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 132 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report presents and compares victimization survey and police statistics on crime in the United States and England and Wales for 1981-96, along with selected court statistics for these countries. Findings show that whether measured by surveys of crime victims or by police statistics, serious crime rates are not generally higher in the United States than in England and Wales. According to 1995 victim surveys -- which measure robbery, assault, burglary, and motor vehicle theft -- crime rates are all higher in England than the United States. The major exception to the pattern of higher crime rates in England and Wales is the murder rate. The 1996 U.S. murder rate was nearly six times higher than England and Wales, although the difference among the countries has narrowed over the past 16 years. Firearms are more often involved in violent crimes in the United States than in England and Wales. Since 1981 an offender's risk of being caught, convicted, and sentenced to incarceration has risen in the United States for all six measured crimes (murder, rape, robbery, assault, burglary, motor vehicle theft) but has fallen in England and Wales for all but murder. The court data addressed in this report include convictions, sentences of incarceration, racial disparities in incarceration, percent of sentence served, and time served. Also considered are the justice system's impact on crime and justice system changes. Data sources are profiled

Recidivism of prisoners released in 1994 by Patrick A Langan( Book )

3 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 38 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

RECIDIVISM OF PRISONERS RELEASED IN 1994: [UNITED STATES] is a database containing information on each of 38,624 sampled prisoners released from prisons in 15 states in 1994 and tracked for three years following their release. The majority of the database consists of information on each released prisoner's entire officially recorded criminal history (before and after the 1994 release). Sources for criminal history information are state and FBI automated RAP sheets ("Records of Arrests and Prosecutions"), which contain records of arrests, adjudications, and sentences. The study is the second major recidivism study conducted by the Bureau of Justice Statistics. The first study tracked over 16,000 prisoners released in 11 states in 1983 (ICPSR 8875) for three years. These two studies are the closest approximation to "national" recidivism studies in the United States. They are distinguished by their large sample size (over 16,000 released prisoners in the first study, 38,624 in the second), geographic breadth of coverage (11 states in the first study, 15 in the second), length of prospective tracking (three years from date of release in both studies), ability to track the movement of released prisoners across state boundaries (both studies), and multiple measures of recidivism (both studies). Demographic data include race, ethnicity, sex, and date of birth ... Cf.: http://dx.doi.org/10.3886/ICPSR03355

Summarizes the results from a study that documents crime and criminal punishment trends from 1981 to 1999 in eight countries: Australia, Canada, England, the Netherlands, Scotland, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States. Each report deals with six crimes that are similarly defined across the eight countries: murder, rape, non-commercial robbery, serious assault, household burglary, and completed motor vehicle theft. Each report uses the same set of measures of criminal punishment, including sentence length imposed, percent of sentence served, and probabilities of arrest, of conviction, and of incarceration
