"Great and mighty things" : outsider art from the Jill and Sheldon Bonovitz Collection by Philadelphia Museum of Art( Book )

5 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 370 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The contemporary art world has been challenged and invigorated by outsider art--works by self-taught practitioners who, by definition, have little to do with mainstream art production, but are nonetheless actively engaged with the visual culture of their time and place. This is the first book to explore the collection of Jill and Sheldon Bonovitz, one of the finest private collections of American outsider art. Twenty-seven artists are included in the selection published here, among them Eugene Von Bruenchenhein, William Edmondson, Howard Finster, Sister Gertrude Morgan, Martín Ramírez, and Bill Traylor. The book presents short biographies of the artists and essays by major scholars that examine the work from both theoretical and historical perspectives, with a particular focus on the relationship of contemporary art to outsider art and how the latter has been critically appropriated into postmodern discourse. Renowned artist Francesco Clemente's fascinating essay places these so-called outsiders in the mystical tradition of Jacob Boehme, Emanuel Swedenborg, and William Blake."--Publisher's website
Who gets to call it art? : the legend of Henry Geldzahler, 1935-1994 by Peter Rosen( Visual )

2 editions published between 2005 and 2006 in English and held by 348 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Henry Geldzahler (1935-94), star curator and cultural impresario, lived a life worth examining. The first curator of the Department of 20th-Century Art at the Metropolitan Museum, first director of visual arts for the National Endowment of the Arts, and the first full-time commissioner of cultural affairs for New York City, his landmark 1969 show at the Metropolitan is still remembered with awe. "New York Painting and Sculpture: 1940-1970" filled 35 galleries with more than 400 groundbreaking works of contemporary art. This film is not a full biographical examination of this singular figure's life, but rather a portrait in profile, as many of 'his' artists talk about Geldzahler and what his friendship meant to them

Andy Warhol, polaroids : celebrities and self-portraits : Jablonka Galerie : Starmach Gallery by Andy Warhol( Book )

2 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 140 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This new catalogue documents a recent exhibition at the Starmach Gallery in Krakow, presenting Andy Warhol's Polaroid work during the last two decades of his life. The 65 color images here include Warhol's self-portraits - occasionally in drag or another kind of costume - as well as Warhol's pictures of celebrities and artists from all fields. Included here are artists such as Keith Haring, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, Francesco Clemente, and Jean-Michel Basquiat; writers such as William S. Burroughs and Truman Capote; and actors including Liza Minelli and Dennis Hopper, among numerous others. These images mark out a territory all their own within Warhol's oeuvre, a space where both living humanity and the spectacle in which it is woven can coexist. Also featured here is "King for a Day," Francesco Clemente's brilliant and revelatory essay on Andy Warhol."--BOOK JACKET
