Five subdivisions comprise this volume. The introduction provides a brief overview of the history of the American Musicological Society. The next three sections review three symposia, the first of which--Musicology and the Computer I--was held in April 1965 and dealt with three of the major areas of computer applications to musicology: analysis, investigation of style, and documentation. The second symposium, held in May 1965 and titled Input Languages to Represent Music (Musicology and the Computer II) wrestled with the problems of translating conventional musical notation into machine-readable numbers, letters, and symbols. The final meeting, Musicology 1966-2000: A Practical Program, was convened in May 1966 and took a forward glance into the last third of the century. The fifth subdivision of the volume is a bibliography which contains some 617 listings of items published up through 1970 and which embraces all aspects of computer applications to music. (Author/PB)
