The atlas of languages : the origin and development of languages throughout the world by Bernard Comrie( Book )

2 editions published in 1998 in German and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Atlas of languages offers an introduction to the world of languages and linguistics for the general reader. This global survey of language families, their distribution, spread, and - in some cases - decline is illustrated by a rich variety of maps, photographs, and tables. In a detailed account of the language families of each region of the world, interesting and sometimes unique features of grammar and vocabulary are identified and explained. The archeological, historical, cultural, or social political background where it has had an impact on the dissemination, development, or decline of a language is examined. The geographical distribution of languages - both historical and contemporary - is reflected in over 30 unique full-color maps. Points of general interest, linguistic, cultural, and historical are highlighted in special boxed features. The writing systems of the world are also examined in detail. The evolution of over 200 languages is explained and illustrated with specific examples, while photographs of ancient artifacts, manuscripts, monuments, and statues all illustrate the use of various writing systems over the last 5,000 years. Finally, the book addresses the issue of disappearing languages, as well as identifying languages that are under threat of extinction. Efforts to preserve an revive the dying languages of the world are fully discussed

Collection of 53 letters : various places, to Ian Macauley by Arthur C Clarke( )

in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

In 1952, at age 17, Ian Macauley wrote to the 34-year-old, successful science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke, asking him to contribute an article to his fledgling science-fiction magazine, Cosmag. Soon thereafter, the two met at a science fiction convention, and Clarke, infatuated with the younger man, began an extensive correspondence with Macauley. In October 1952, Clarke suggests that Macauley become his personal assistant, a suggestion that may have alarmed Macauley, since he rejected Clarke's article. In a Christmas Day letter of the same year, Clarke emphasizes to Macauley how extensive are his financial resources, discusses with him the numerous books and articles which he is writing or which are ready for publication, updates him on foreign sales and royalties, and suggests that the two of them take a trip together to Indian Lake (N.Y.). Though the urgent tone of Clarke's letters eases by early 1953 (he would become engaged to Marilyn Mayfield in June), he continues to apprise Macauley of his work in great detail. After a 1967 letter in which Clarke discusses business aspects of the film 2001, Clarke does not write to Macauley again until 1996
