African canvas : the art of West African women by Margaret Courtney-Clarke( Book )

32 editions published between 1990 and 2008 in 5 languages and held by 1,076 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Photojournalist Courtney-Clarke, whose book Ndebele captured the painted wall art of South Africa, brings the same inquiring spirit to this depiction of her three-year trek from Nigeria to Senegal. Surviving sandstorms, locusts and malaria, she documents the bold geometric and symbolic wall paintings made by women in remote West African villages. These women transform objects from their daily world--a fish net, a cooking pot, a weaving, a calabash--into rippling patterns laden with cosmic significance. Made with natural pigments from plants or clay, these pictures often perish in the rainy season. Creeping urbanization is also taking its toll on the villages, whose mud compounds, houses, clothing, body painting and pottery Courtney-Clarke documents as well. This strong, moving photoessay is equally valuable as an investigation of a dwindling way of life and as a permanent record of a seldom-seen vernacular art form."--Amazon

Cry sadness into the coming rain by Margaret Courtney-Clarke( Book )

3 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is Margaret Courtney-Clarke's visual ode to her home country of Namibia, and describes the bare circumstances of ordinary Namibians, of women and men forced to negotiate ravaged lives. Returning to Namibia in 2009 after decades of living abroad, Courtney-Clarke encountered a changed country in the throes of unrestrained development, the Namib Desert desecrated, and peoples migrating from rural settlements to towns in search of a better life. 0These photos are the result of Courtney-Clarke?s travels over 30,000 kilometers across dusty plains, sand dunes and salt pans, through conservancies, homelands and forgotten outposts. They evidence her passionate concern for human enterprise and failure, and for an inhospitable environment infused with remnants of apartheid as well as hope. Exhibition: FNB Joburg Art Fair, Johannesburg, South Africa (08.-10.09.2017); Stellenbosch Modern and Contemporary Art Gallery, Stellenbosch and Cape Town, South Africa (2017); National Art Gallery of Namibia, Windhoek, Namibia (2018)
