An introduction to philosophy by Jacques Maritain( Book )

39 editions published between 1930 and 2005 in English and held by 1,070 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Jacques Maritain's An Introduction to Philosophy was first published in 1931. Since then, this book has stood the test of time as a clear guide to what philosophy is and how to philosophize. Inspired by the Thomistic Revival called for by Leo XIII, Maritain relies heavily on Aristotle and St. Thomas Aquinas to shape a philosophy that, far from sectarian theology in disguise, is driven by reason and engages the modern world. Re-released as part of the Sheed & Ward Classic series, An Introduction to Philosophy is sure to enliven the minds of students and general readers for

The reformation in England by G Constant( Book )

5 editions published in 1934 in English and held by 354 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The author writes this book with a concentration and an almost ascetic discipline which result in a clarity and purposefulness rare in any work and especially in a history. The book primarily tells what happened to English ecclesiastical life with 1509 and 1547, and how it happened. Reformation and schism are separated, and the 'supreme head of the Church of England' is separately explained. The division into chapters and the organization of the whole material is planned to clarify individually these three contrasting motives, which, during the reign of Henry VIII, maintained individuality. The chapters on the divorce, royal supremacy and the champions of Catholic unity, and the discussions of international policy build up with great interest and authority the role of the king. The chapters on the advanced party, on the Henricians and on dogma, with liberal but most purposeful use of biography, distinguish the heretical and schismatical strands. -- Back cover
Neglected saints by E. I Watkin( Book )

11 editions published between 1955 and 1994 in English and Undetermined and held by 298 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The saints whose portraits are sketched here are either practically unknown or, if their identity is common knowledge--St. Martin of Tours, for example--knowledge is confined to one or two outstanding facts. The author's scope is to paint a true and lifelike picture of a saint whose life has much more inspiration to offer today's Christian than has previously been widely known
The bow in the clouds; an essay towards the integration of experience by E. I Watkin( Book )

11 editions published between 1931 and 1954 in English and held by 262 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The following essay makes no claim to be a scientific elaboration of its thesis, the affirmation of the metaphysical order of reality as revealed in the varieties of human experience and the integration of human experience by that order. Its more modest scope is but to contemplate that order or experience from various points of view and different levels in the hope that the view from one point may supplement and illuminate the view from another, until the reader catches a glimpse of the mountain of being as it rises from the impenetrable darkness of matter to the impenetrable light of God."
