This guide is intended to provide the researcher with a systematic approach to the grant application process and assists the researcher in developing a competitive and successful application. The major elements of the application process are addressed in seven sections. Part 1 presents the main choices which must be made at the beginning of the process, including whether the potential researcher has the necessary credentials, the components of the application, and the funding mechanism to be selected. Part 2 discusses key contacts which are useful in facilitating the successful completion of a grant application. Part 3 assesses the strengths and weaknesses of various research environments. Part 4 covers what to include in the research application and when to write it. Part 5 gives practical suggestions for writing a persuasive application. Part 6 contains suggestions for focusing on the reviewers as the target for the successful application, and Part 7 covers what happens when an application is or is not funded. Tables and charts include an inventory of research strengths of the investigator, sample project budget outlines, timetables of preapplication and application process tasks, a sample table of contents, and a final application checklist. 8 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 389 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Since about 1980, substance abuse prevention programs have taken a youth-based, "zero-tolerance" approach. Significant increases in abstinence have followed, but so have simultaneous increases in high-risk use. Arguing that the basic assumptions of this approach are flawed, authors Raymond P. Daugherty and Carl Leukefeld offer a dynamic alternative: the Lifestyle Risk Reduction Model, which reshapes accepted alcohol and drug premises, messages, and strategies to make them relevant throughout the entire lifespan. It will prove to be a valuable resource to clinicians, teachers, and students in alcoholism studies, public health, health psychology, behavioral medicine, consulting and counseling psychology, and sociology

Past and future directions of the D.A.R.E. program : an evaluation review( )

1 edition published in 1994 in English and held by 0 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Drug Abuse Resistance Education (dare) was designed to prevent students' use of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs by using trained, uniformed police officers in the classroom. This report examines the effectiveness of dare in drug use prevention and how this program compares to other prevention programs. The report is organized into four sections and four appendices. Section 1 provides an overview of school-based drug prevention programs. Section 2 presents the methodologies used and results of each of the four components of the implementation assessment. It includes information on the national/regional-level operations of dare, the State-level operations, and the implementation of dare and other drug prevention programs at the local level. The report's methodology appears in Section 3, along with the results of the outcome assessment, while in Section 4, findings are discussed from both the implementation and outcome assessments. The findings show that the program has been extremely successful at placing drug education in the Nation's schools. Appendices contain sampling information for the school district drug prevention coordinators' survey, descriptions of each study utilized in the meta-analysis conducted for the outcome assessment, a bibliography of comparison program evaluations, and data collection materials for the implementation assessment.
