Books that made the difference : what people told us by Gordon A Sabine( Book )

10 editions published between 1983 and 1984 in English and Undetermined and held by 878 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Initiated by the Center for the Book, the Library of Congress program that promotes books and reading, this text contains the results of interviews of 1,382 Americans who were asked, "What book made the greatest difference in your life?" And "What was that difference?" The introduction contains the titles and authors of the books named by interviewees, as well as information about these respondents (where they live and work as well as their occupations and names). The first section of the book contains interviews from the National Books That Made the Difference Project, in which people discussed the impact that books had made on them, including the comfort in discovering that they were not unique in their feelings and experiences. Books served as inspiration for overcoming handicaps, trying new careers, "getting away from it all," changing ways of thinking, reinforcing their thinking, making money, starting new organizations, and making them feel better. The second part discusses some special insights about libraries and reading, including why some people who can read, don't; the ways in which libraries encourage people to read; and the influences gained from other printed material. The second part shows how to apply the techniques used in this project to create a successful local or state program to produce more support for the local library or library system. An appendix contains press releases and other publicity materials. (El)

How students rate their schools and teachers by Gordon A Sabine( Book )

6 editions published in 1971 in English and held by 322 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This document incorporates questionnaire results of a national study sample drawn from the million high school juniors and seniors who had taken the act battery during 1969-70. Students responded to more than 100 multiple-choice items and to one open-end question each on student protest, parents, and schools and teachers. This volume records excerpts from responses to the schools and teachers question by 1,603 students. Twenty self-rating questions for teachers, based on characteristics reported by students as those most needed by teachers and those most admired by students, conclude the publication. (Author)

Teachers tell it--like it is, like it should be; Gordon Sabine raps with 2,692 high school teachers for the American College Testing Program by Gordon A Sabine( Book )

6 editions published in 1971 in English and Undetermined and held by 93 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book summarizes and reports on a questionnaire mailed to high school teachers all over the nation during the spring of 1971. Confidential replies were requested to 58 agree-disagree questions and to four open-end questions such as: 1) what really goes on in high schools today; 2) what teachers privately think of their students; 3) what teachers think of the parents of their students; 4) what teachers think of their principals, superintendents, school board members, and legislators; 5) who most misunderstands teachers, and how; and 6) how the teacher would run the school system if they could be superintendent for a year. Replies were received from 85 large and small high schools in every state of the union and represented 44 percent of the 6,111 teaching faculty of these schools. The major content of the book consist of more than 1,200 selected quotations from the open-end questions, divided into two sections--how it is and how it should be. The third section contains the answers to each questionnaire item, and the fourth chapter offers some interpretations and suggestions for teachers, parents, and school management officials. The participating schools are listed. (Mbm)
