These 52 half-hour programs are the core of the "French in action" series, an innovative and effective system of learning French created at Yale University by Capretz, and can be used with other components of the series (audiocassettes, textbook, study guides, workbooks). The French in Action video series contains an entertaining teleplay continuing over 52 lessons. The teleplay engages its audience through suspenseful and dramatic episodes, totally in French, between two young people named Mireille and Robert. Based on an engaging boy-meets-girl story, the tongue-in-cheek humour and human interest of the plot and its real-life settings in France make the language memorable and enjoyable, resulting in a high level of communicative proficiency. Each segment is accompanied by a pedagogical section that explains the meaning of new words and phrases presented in each episode through the use of hundreds of video excerpts from French film, television, advertisements, interviews, and cartoons. The Capretz method is to teach French through a totally structured and planned language immersion. The method incorporates not only the typical grammatical structures, but both verbal and non-verbal communication. All elements are recognized and their importance addressed--gestures, looks, attitudes, behavior, intonation, and cultural conventions and assumptions
