Chihuly : form from fire by Dale Chihuly( Book )

5 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 710 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Chihuly's originality lies in his refusal to believe that there are fixed rules that must be adhered to," wrote the late Henry Geldzahler, former curator of contemporary art of New York's Metropolitan Museum, in his essay for this work. Accompanying the artist's traveling retrospective, the book documents 10 of Chihuly's rule breaking series from the Baskets, begun in the late 1970s, through the Pilchuck Stumps of 1992. Painter and art critic Walter Darby Bannard introduces the volume, which is more inclusive than a typical exhibition catalog, with a personal response to Chihuly and his glass. Seventy-five full-color reproductions and commentary on the individual series by the artist and noted authorities provide a visual and verbal overview of the artist's career. With listings of selected museum and public collections and permanent installations as well as an extensive bibliography, this book offers a definitive look at "Chihuly As of 1993," as Geldzahler titled his provocative essay in which he asserts that Chihuly "does go over the top at times."

13 editions published in 1991 in English and held by 411 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Charles Bell's art is bright and colourful, to the point of being kitsch: this book shows his photorealist paintings of tin toys and toy tableaux, pinball machines, marbles and gumball machines
Painters painting : a candid history of the New York art scene, 1940-1970( Visual )

4 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 391 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Emile de Antonio was a close friend to many New York painters who later went on to become famous. He filmed and interviewed them informally in their studios. Artists included are Willem de Kooning, Andy Warhol, Robert Motherwell, Barnett Newman, Jules Olitski, Frank Stella, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Helen Frankenthaler, Kenneth Noland, Larry Poons, Phillip Pavia, and Hans Hoffman
Andy Warhol : portraits of the seventies and eighties by Andy Warhol( Book )

15 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 377 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The portraits of Andy Warhol, the undisputed champion of American Pop Art, are the fruits of one of his most significant creative periods. The `icon' of the series, Marilyn Monroe, originated as early as 1962. From then on until the last year of his life, Warhol created a virtual museum of personalities, both living and deceased, from the worlds of film, showbusiness, art, literature and politics. Among the best-known images shown here are those of Truman Capote, David Hockney, John Lennon, Judy Garland, Rudolph Nureyev, Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Characteristic of Warhol's unique style of portraiture is the use of silkscreens made from polaroid photographs - some of which were taken by the artist during encounters with his `sitters' at the notorious Factory. Warhol primed his silkscreens with a rich repertoire of colours, both bold and expressionistic, which gave rise to some of the most distinctive portraits of our time, reviving the genre more successfully than anyone since John Singer Sargent
David Hockney by David Hockney( Book )

5 editions published in 1976 in English and held by 285 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

'The most remarkable autobiographical work any artist, scientist or man of letters of his generation has written.' Nicholas Phillipson, Times Literary Supplement. 'Hockney tells us in a wonderfully straightforward way about what triggered off most of the paintings and many of the graphics reproduced in this book, and it's so brilliant and account of how his art becomes inextricably involved with life that it amounts to a genuine breakthrough in communication.' Robert Melville, New Statesman. Born in 1937, David Hockney is one of the most popular and successful of living artists. His paintings of California, such as A Bigger Splash (which was used as the title of the controversial feature film - partly fictitious - of his life and work), have become classics of popular imagery. Colourful, frank and decided in his views, he has been lionized by the fashionable wherever he happens to be, and he has become a cult, figure for the young. Recently, his sets and costumes for the Glyndebourne production of Stravinsky's Rake's Progress were enthusiastically acclaimed and, once again, brought him into the limelight of artistic and public attention. And yet, despite all this, Hockney has always remained a totally serious artist. Dedicated, hard-working and private, he has shown an astonishing ability to turn his back on all the fuss, and remain completely unaffected by it. His work shows an extraordinary capacity for renewal and invention, for unexpected new departures. In this witty, candid and revealing account of himself, which is in the tradition of Cellini's Autobiography, he tells of his early years in Bradford, where he was born and grew up, and first went to art school; his years at the Royal College of Art, during which he had his breakthrough and first came to public attention; his sojourn in California, which inspired his best-known paintings, drawings and prints; and his present phase in Paris, where he now lives, and where a recent exhibition at the Louvre established him as a 'Continental master'. What makes this book so fascinating is not only that the entire text is by Hockney himself - so that his life-story is given maximum documentation - but also that it reproduces almost all his paintings and graphic work to date, as well as many of his drawings. In this respect, the book amounts to an oeuvre catalogue, although its structure follows the narrative of Hockney's text and is relatively informal. The story, presented in more or less chronological form, is informative and humorous, full of descriptions of his work, anecdotes about himself, other artists and friends, his thoughts about art, and his ambiguous relationship with abstract and other current art styles. Above all, it is the story not so much of someone who has achieved something and who is happy to rest there, but of an artist who is ceaselessly striving to improve his art, and to learn how to interpret the world around him through his artistry and imagination

"1971: the artist David Hockney is well on his way to art world super-stardom. Filmmaker Jack Hazan, camera rolling, follows Hockney from London to New York to Los Angeles--capturing the artist as he struggles to create what would prove to be some of his most enduring works: those featuring Hockney's model and lover, Peter Schlesinger. Straddling the boundary between documentary and fiction, A bigger splash tells the story of Hockney's breakup with Schlesinger and its effect on Hockney, his work, and his close circle of friends"--Container
Larry Stanton : painting and drawing by Larry Stanton( Book )

1 edition published in 1986 in English and held by 122 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Larry Stanton was a portraitist. He was always drawing people. He didn't exhibit much. Like most portraitists he was shy about showing his work, the worry about 'likeness', (perhaps a wrong notion) always seems to intervene. A kind of naive notion that the portrait IS them seems to take place. Larry struggled with this and slowly his struggle was beginning to bear fruit, a fact which is visible in the selection of his drawings and paintings reproduced here
Painters painting by Emile De Antonio( Visual )

7 editions published between 2009 and 2010 in English and held by 118 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A vibrant collective portrait of the legendary figures who powered the tumultuous post-war New York art scene ... De Antonio shows artists (and their critics and patrons) gossiping, drinking, and talking about life and art, and in the process illuminates the genesis of Abstract Expressionism. Footage of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's landmark exhibition New York Painting and Sculpture 1940-1970 supplement the film."--Container
Subway by Bruce Davidson( Book )

5 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 103 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The intrepid documentary photographer Bruce Davidson, veteran of the civil rights movement and the ghetto ( East 100th Street ), has taken his camera into the New York subways, and has emerged, as might be expected, bereft of a camera. That was a small price to pay for these sensitive and intensely colorful pictures. He hopes that we will see the beauty he found there, but the gritty, seamy images reproduced here will not increase ridership. The bizarre inhabitants of the underground are the majority, with the sober nine-to-five'ers seeming distinctly out of place
