U. S. education reform and national security by Council on Foreign Relations( Book )

The United States' failure to educate its students leaves them unprepared to compete and threatens the country's ability to thrive in a global economy and maintain its leadership role. This report notes that while the United States invests more in K-12 public education than many other developed countries, its students are ill prepared to compete with their global peers. According to the results of the 2009 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), an international assessment that measures the performance of 15-year-olds in reading, mathematics, and science every three years, U.S. students rank fourteenth in reading, twenty-fifth in math, and seventeenth in science compared to students in other industrialized countries. The lack of preparedness poses threats on five national security fronts: economic growth and competitiveness, physical safety, intellectual property, U.S. global awareness, and U.S. unity and cohesion, says the report. Too many young people are not employable in an increasingly high-skilled and global economy, and too many are not qualified to join the military because they are physically unfit, have criminal records, or have an inadequate level of education. The report proposes three overarching policy recommendations: implement educational expectations and assessments in subjects vital to protecting national security; make structural changes to provide students with good choices; and, launch a "national security readiness audit" to hold schools and policymakers accountable for results and to raise public awareness
Microsoft vs. the justice department : playing monopoly( Visual )

4 editions published between 1998 and 2005 in English and held by 83 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

N this program Bill Gates, Paul [i.e. Steve] Ballmer and other Microsoft executives square off against their opponents including Netscape CEO Jim Barksdale and Asst. Attorney General Joel Klein to discuss the allegations that Microsoft has made predatory use of its monopoly power to stifle its competition. Microsoft's integration of it's Web browser, Internet Explorer, into Window's core code, makes the choice of competitive programs difficult. There is also a growing concern that by manufacturing Internet Explorer with pre-selected Microsoft-centric hyperlinks, Microsoft will become the de facto keeper of the gateway to cyberspace

Lessons of hope : how to fix our schools by Joel I Klein( )

1 edition published in 2015 in English and held by 14 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 2002, New York City's newly elected mayor, Michael Bloomberg, made a historic announcement: his administration had won control of the city's school system in a first step toward reversing its precipitous decline. In a controversial move, he appointed Joel Klein, an accomplished lawyer from outside the education establishment, to lead this ambitious campaign. Lessons of Hope is Klein's inside account of his eight-year mission of improvement: demanding accountability, eliminating political favoritism, and battling a powerful teachers union that seemed determined to protect a status quo that didn't work for kids. Klein's initiatives resulted in more school choice, higher graduation rates, and improved test scores. The New York City model is now seen as a national standard for meaningful school reform. But the journey was not easy. Klein faced resistance and conflict at every turn

This site is not considered significant. In addition, prehistoric sites may exist in undisturbed areas of the facility, though these are not likely to be significant. Recommended studies include: 1) surveying undisturbed areas of the facility for archeological resources; 2) revising facility publications and orientation procedures to include mention of DARCOM's historic preservation responsibilities; and 3) establishing an on-call relationship with an entity capable of delivering professional archeological consulting services to deal with the unanticipated discovery of archeological remains

An Archeological Overview and Management Plan for the Letterkenny Army Depot( Book )

1 edition published in 1985 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This archeological overview and management plan provides a tool which can be used by DARCOM and decision-makers at Letterkenny Army Depot (LEAD) to assist in complying with regulations and procedures relating to historic preservation Technical Manual, Technical Note, Resources Management, Army Regulation. This document summarizes data relating to the area's environmental history; cultural chronology; historic and modern ground disturbances; previous archeological surveys; presently identified archeological resources; known artifact, ecofact, and/or documentary collections relating to archeological resources; potentially identifiable but not presently recorded archeological resources; significant archeological resources; locational data of known archeological resources; and locational data of potential archeological resources. Archeological field surveys on the LEAD facility recorded three prehistoric archeological sites and three historic period archeological sites. Documentary resources suggest that there are at least 345 potential historic period archeological sites. While large portions of the facility have been disturbed by development activities, there are intermittent areas which have not been disturbed or which have been disturbed only minimally. These areas may potentially yield significant archeological cultural resources which have not yet been recorded. The physical integrity of the potential site is unknown

Remnants of the original Tobyhanna Military Reservation buildings may still exist in TOAD's GDA-1 and remnants of a structure associated within the Dodge, Meggs and Dodge Co. may still exist in TOAD's GDA-6. Recommendations for archeological survey include: undisturbed areas near marshland and streams to identify possible archeological resources and areas near future development projects to document inferred land disturbance. Informing personnel of DARCOM's historic preservation responsibilities is also recommended

An Archeological Overview and Management Plan for the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center by Joel I Klein( Book )

1 edition published in 1984 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This plan provides a tool which can be used by DARCOM and decision-makers at the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center to assist in complying with existing regulations and procedures relating to historic preservation. This document summarizes data relating to the area's environmental history; cultural chronology; historic and modern ground disturbances; etc. No significant archeological remains are known to be extant on AMMRC property. One prehistroic archeological site is reported to have existed on AMMRC property but is believed to have been destroyed by construction activities. Additional prehistoric archeological remains have been recovered in areas immediately adjacent to AMMRC and the possibility exists that previously unrecorded prehistoric remains may exist within undisturbed portions of AMMRC property. A literature review indicates that at least 28 potential historic period archeological sites may exist at AMMRC. These fall into two broad categories: those associated with Watertown Arsenal and those associated with civilian occupation of the area prior to government ownership. The physical integrity of these sites is unknown. Only a few are believe to be potentially significant. Additional studies recommended include 1) gathering more data relating to non-extant arsenal-related structures; 2) an archeological survey of wooded and paved areas in the southeast portion of AMMRC; and 3) an evaluation of the area south of North Beacon Street presently used for recreational purposes
