In search of Dracula; a true history of Dracula and vampire legends by Raymond T McNally( Book )

38 editions published between 1972 and 1997 in English and Undetermined and held by 2,112 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Primarily a history of Vlad III (more often referred to as Vlad Dracula, Vlad Tepes or Vlad the Impaler), the namesake and partial inspiration behind the fictional Count Dracula of Bram Stoker's novel. Totally unconnected to vampirism, the historical Dracula was a Wallachian ruler widely known for his cruelty, though he is also sometimes regarded as a Romanian national hero, largely for his defense against invading Turks. Also includes chapters on vampires myths, Erzsébet Báthory (a 17th century who fed upon and bathed in blood in the belief that it would preserve her youth) and the fictional Dracula in literature and film. Also contains translations of contemporary German and Russian tales of Vlad III (Manuscript No. 806 at the Monastery Library of St. Gall, Switzerland and MS 11/1088 in the Kirillov-Belozersky Monastery Collection at the Saltykov-Schredin Public Library, the latter of which is translated into English for the first time) and then-current Romanian oral folktales about Vlad III

Dracula, prince of many faces : his life and his times by Radu Florescu( Book )

19 editions published between 1989 and 2009 in English and Turkish and held by 1,161 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From Publishers Weekly: The fictional Dracula of Bram Stoker's novel is better known than the actual Vlad Dracula the Impaler, who ruled as prince of Wallachia for three brief periods in the mid-15th century. This study by two Boston College professors who have written other books about Dracula explores how the legend of the Transylvanian vampire arose. As a ruler, Dracula spread terror far and wide, inflicting appalling tortures on his victims, killing them by impalement, by boiling or skinning them alive. Yet when the time came to defend Europe against Turkish invaders, he led the battle, and the authors view him as "the first modern Renaissance prince of the land.'' Florescu and McNally offer so much detail about the battles of kings, princes, princelings and claimants to thrones that the book will appeal only to the most ardent Dracula fanatics
