Halloween and other festivals of death and life( Book )

11 editions published between 1993 and 2000 in English and held by 812 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Jack Santino has put together the first collection of essays to examine the evolution of Halloween from its Celtic origins through its adaptation into modern culture. Using a wide variety of perspectives and approaches, the thirteen essayists examine customs, communities, and material culture to reveal how Halloween has manifested itself throughout all aspects of our society to become not just a marginal survivor of a dying tradition but a thriving, contemporary, post-industrial festival. Its steadily increasing popularity, despite overcommercialization and criticism, is attributed to its powerful symbolism that employs both pre-Christian images and concepts from popular culture to appeal to groups of all ages, orientations, and backgrounds
All around the year : holidays and celebrations in American life by Jack Santino( Book )

11 editions published between 1994 and 1995 in English and held by 712 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Whether decorating Easter trees, observing the New Year's Eve ritual of the Hungry Hog Society, or celebrating Wagner's birthday by incinerating a model of Valhalla on an outdoor barbecue to the closing strains of "Gotterdammerung," Americans combine the traditional and the offbeat as they create new holidays and celebrate old ones." "In All Around the Year, Jack Santino guides the reader through a variety of holidays, festivals, and life-cycle rituals and celebrations. Drawing from history, anthropology, popular culture, and folklore, Santino shows the intricate relationships between holidays and the roles of celebrations and rituals in people's lives. He combines scholarship, field research, and personal reminiscence in this highly readable account of a subject that constitutes a major dimension of our social lives. Nearly fifty illustrations depict holiday symbols and decorations both traditional and contemporary, from greeting cards to wreath-bedecked cars to restaurant menus."--Jacket

New old-fashioned ways : holidays and popular culture by Jack Santino( Book )

7 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 353 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Jack Santino's analysis encompasses everything from movies to romance novels, from television shows to comic books. One especially fascinating feature of this study is its examination of the packaged-foods industry and the manner in which soft drinks, beer, snack cakes, cookies, candy, and breakfast cereals are regularly repackaged to reflect particular holidays. In what becomes a central theme of the book, Santino shows how holidays give companies the opportunity to create an illusion of novelty for products that otherwise remain unchanged over time. For example, the holiday Chips Ahoy cookies or Halloween Oreos differ only in their appearance from the everyday products, but they assume a quality of uniqueness through their association with a special time of the year." "Throughout the book, Santino examines the logic by which commercial culture and holidays are linked. Halloween, for instance, with its traditional symbolism of death, evil, and monsters, has served as a theme for heavy metal music and slasher films. This, in turn, has led to some interesting transmutations as one text borrows from another in the wake of a commercial success. When John Carpenter's pioneering 1978 slasher film Halloween became a box-office hit, it was perhaps inevitable that other holiday-based slasher films - New Year's Evil, April Fool's Day, and Silent Night, Deadly Night - would follow." "Copiously illustrated, New Old-Fashioned Ways is at once entertaining and informative - a treat for general readers as well as an important work for scholars in a variety of fields, including communications, folklore, anthropology, sociology, and business."--Jacket
Signs of war and peace : social conflict and the uses of symbols in public in Northern Ireland by Jack Santino( Book )

14 editions published between 2001 and 2004 in English and held by 276 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The work is interdisciplinary, combining ethnographic, anthropological, folkloristic, and performance studies approaches. The book benefits from a large amount of field work by the author in Northern Ireland, and as a result contains both ethnographic data and revealing interviews with many people who have participated in the display events Santino analyzes. The perspective that Santino offers helps to explain the intensity of the conflict as well as the origins, motivations, and justifications of bonfires, murals, commemorative displays, parades and other forms that symbolically articulate what he terms the "dual master narratives" that underlie and in many ways articulate the parameters of that conflict."--Jacket

The hallowed eve : dimensions of culture in a calendar festival in Northern Ireland by Jack Santino( Book )

9 editions published between 1998 and 2015 in English and Undetermined and held by 226 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In Northern Ireland, Halloween is such a major celebration that it is often called the Irish Christmas. A day of family reunions, meals, and fun, Halloween brings people of all ages together with rhyming, storytelling, family fireworks, and community bonfires. Perhaps most important, it has become a day that transcends the social conflict found in this often troubled nation. Through the extensive use of interviews, The Hallowed Eve offers a fascinating look at the various customs, both past and present, that mark the celebration of the holiday. Looking through the lenses of gender, ethnicity, and religious affiliation, Jack Santino examines how the traditions exist in a nonthreatening, celebratory way to provide a model of how life could be in Northern Ireland. Halloween, concludes Santino, is a marriage of death and life, a joining of cultural opposites: indoor and outdoor, domesticity and wildness, female and male, young and old

Commercialism, capitalism, and celebration by Jack Santino( )

1 edition published in 2005 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
