An introduction to comparative psychology. The limits of animal intelligence by C. Lloyd Morgan( Book )

85 editions published between 1893 and 2012 in 4 languages and held by 881 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"My central object in this work is to discuss the relation of the psychology of man to that of the higher animals, since such a discussion forms in my opinion the best introduction to Comparative Psychology. A secondary object, subordinate indeed, yet forming an integral part of my plan, is to consider the place of consciousness in nature, the relation of psychical evolution to physical and biological evolution, and the light which comparative psychology throws on certain philosophical problems. It was my original intention to compare my own results with those which have been reached by previous observers and thinkers in this field of investigation and inquiry. But I found that, in the first place, this would largely increase the bulk of the book; that, in the second place, it would introduce a controversial tone, which I was desirous of avoiding; and that it would in other ways interfere with what appeared the most convenient mode of developing my subject. I therefore abandoned my original intention, and adopted a more direct method of exposition and discussion. It is, however, all the more incumbent on me to acknowledge my indebtedness to my predecessors and contemporaries. Those whose acquaintance with the subject is most wide and extensive, will best be able to judge how far what I have written is a mere restatement of what has already been written, and how far, if at all, I have done something towards advancing the boundaries of our knowledge or rendering the knowledge that we possess clearer and more exact. Others will perhaps do well to regard me as a secretary who has, I trust, with due diligence thrown into convenient form the data with which he has been supplied"--Preface. "Of the six chapters which constitute this concluding volume of G. J. Romanes' Darwin, and after Darwin, three, the first two and the last, were in type at the time of his death. For the selection and arrangement of all that is contained in the other three chapters I am wholly responsible"--Preface. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)

Animal life and intelligence by C. Lloyd Morgan( )

38 editions published between 1890 and 2020 in English and held by 539 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"There are many books in our language which deal with Animal Intelligence in an anecdotal and conventionally popular manner. There are a few, notably those by Mr. Romanes and Mr. Mivart, which bring adequate knowledge and training to bear on a subject of unusual difficulty. In the following pages I have endeavoured to contribute something (imperfect, as I know full well, but the result of several years' study and thought) to our deeper knowledge of those mental processes which we may fairly infer from the activities of dumb animals. The consideration of Animal Intelligence, from the scientific and philosophical standpoint, has been my primary aim"--Preface. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)

Outlines of psychology : an elementary treatise with some practical applications by Josiah Royce( Book )

1 edition published in 1903 in English and held by 261 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"By the consent of the publishers of the work thus prepared, I have been able to use the material of this, my former very summary sketch of Psychology, as the core of the present elementary book. I have indeed revised such of the former discussion as I here use; and I have added a proportionately large amount of new text, and have endeavoured to give the present volume its own unity. What remains from the original sketch is, however, especially the tendency to make a number of practical applications of psychological theory at various places in my discussion--a tendency which may be of service to some readers who, like myself, are fond of defining a good many of the problems of teaching, and of practical life, more or less in psychological terms, so far as they are able to do so. Otherwise, as I hope, the present work speaks for itself"--Preface. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)

The coming of evolution : the story of a great revolution in science by John W Judd( Book )

1 edition published in 1910 in English and held by 154 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

John Wesley Judd (1840-1916) had a distinguished career, serving as both President of the Geological Society and Dean of the Royal College of Science. Before his retirement as Professor of Geology from Imperial College, he wrote this concise and accessible review of the beginnings of evolutionary theory. Judd skilfully examined the roots of an idea that, already by 1910, had profoundly influenced every branch of science and permeated the work of historians, politicians and theologians. His lively narrative introduces the key individuals, including Darwin and Lyell, who brought about this intellectual revolution. Judd analyses the principal influences that worked upon these scientists as well as the factors that permitted them to remain open to radical new views. His appreciation of the vision, courage and far-reaching impact of the work of both Lyell and Darwin, and the interplay between their ideas, is persuasively and eloquently expressed.--
