Foreword: A new lot of animals was coming in. Here was an amazing northward-ranging antelope from the steppes of Siberia almost rubbing noses through the bars of its traveling crate with a giant ant-eater from the steaming jungles of South America, a slim-flanked tiger from India, a pair of excited little African squirrels stacked on a box of exotic birds from the Far East. Here was a pent-up dynamite and beauty and rarity, in a few minutes to be turned over to our keeping to be exhibited for the admiration and wonder of a nature-loving public. Now it was up to us to build new lives for these creatures. We must give themopportunities to lead new lives not so very different from their old ones, except that no longer need they fear the dangers of surprise attack and the ever-compelling search for food. Here in the New York Zoological Park they would live longer, more care-free lives than could possibly be their lot in the wild. And in return they would provide us with constant entertainment and pleasure and more knowledge of the wonders of the wild animal world. For behind the scenes in a great zoological park there is always an atmosphere of study and quite observation, of recording habits and aptitudes, of research and questing for information. There are adventures and misadventures, fun and excitement, and a great many puzzles that only long experience can solve. In this book Mr. Bridges and I have set down some of the daily happenings in the wild animal world of the Zoological Park. Some of these chapters have appeared, in slightly different form, in the New York Sun and in This Week. The illustrations, unless otherwise credited, are from the albums of the New York Zoological Park.--Raymond L. Ditmars
