The quark and the jaguar : adventures in the simple and the complex by Murray Gell-Mann( Book )

61 editions published between 1994 and 2011 in 9 languages and held by 442 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

These seemingly disparate pursuits come together in Gell-Mann's current work at the Santa Fe Institute, where scientists are investigating the similarities and differences among complex adaptive systems - systems that learn or evolve by utilizing acquired information. They include a child learning his or her native language, a strain of bacteria becoming resistant to an antibiotic, the scientific community testing new theories, or an artist implementing a creative idea. The Quark and the Jaguar is Gell-Mann's own story of finding the connections between the basic laws of physics and the complexity and diversity of the natural world. The simple: a quark inside an atom. The complex: a jaguar prowling its jungle territory in the night. Exploring the relationship between them becomes a series of exciting intellectual adventures

50 years of quarks by Murray Gell-Mann( Book )

7 editions published in 2015 in English and Undetermined and held by 121 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Today it is known that the atomic nuclei are composed of smaller constituents, the quarks. A quark is always bound with two other quarks, forming a baryon or with an antiquark, forming a meson. The quark model was first postulated in 1964 by Murray Gell-Mann -- who coined the name "quark" from James Joyce's novel Finnegans Wake -- and by George Zweig, who then worked at CERN. In the present theory of strong interactions -- Quantum Chromodynamics proposed by H Fritzsch and Gell-Mann in 1972 -- the forces that bind the quarks together are due to the exchange of eight gluons. On the 50th anniversary of the quark model, this invaluable volume looks back at the developments and achievements in the elementary particle physics that eventuated from that beautiful model. Written by an international team of distinguished physicists, each of whom have made major developments in the field, the volume provides an essential overview of the present state to the academics and researchers.--
Let there be words( Visual )

1 edition published in 2007 in English and held by 104 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

What precisely is language, and how did humans acquire it? In an effort to answer those essential questions, this program journeys back to prehistoric times in search of language's origin. But this is not a passive discussion, as Noam Chomsky; Brown University's Philip Lieberman; Johanna Nichols, of U.C. Berkeley; Stanford University's Merritt Ruhlen; professor of anthropology Richard Klein; Nobel physicist Murray Gell-Mann; and others passionately defend their points of view. Additional topics include distinguishing features of human communication and what humankind's first utterances may have been. The early evolution and migration of humans is also considered. Murray Gell-Mann : selected papers by Murray Gell-Mann( Book )

13 editions published between 2009 and 2010 in English and held by 93 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Murray Gell-Mann is one of the leading physicists of the world. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1969 for his work on the classification and symmetries of elementary particles, including the approximate SU(3) symmetry of hadrons. His list of publications is impressive; a number of his papers have become landmarks in physics. In 1953, Gell-Mann introduced the strangeness quantum number, conserved by the strong and electromagnetic interactions but not by the weak interaction. In 1954 he and F E Low proposed what was later called the renormalization group. In 1958 he and R P Feynman wrote an important article on the V-A theory of the weak interaction. In 1961 and 1962 he described his ideas about the SU(3) symmetry of hadrons and its violation, leading to the prediction of the [symbol]- particle. In 1964 he proposed the quark picture of hadrons. In 1971 he and H Fritzsch proposed the exactly conserved "color" quantum number and in 1972 they discussed what they later called quantum chromodynamics (QCD), the gauge theory of color. These major publications and many others are collected in this volume, providing physicists with easy access to much of Gell-Mann's work. Some of the articles are concerned with his recollections of the history of elementary particle physics in the third quarter of the twentieth century

Birth and death( Visual )

1 edition published in 2007 in English and held by 42 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

It is predicted that within a century more than half of the world's languages will become extinct, but as languages are lost, new ones emerge naturally or are constructed. This program provides insights into the language life cycle through topics ranging from constructed languages such as Esperanto, to language endangerment and preservation, to the role of globalization in language obsolescence
Civilization to colonization( Visual )

1 edition published in 2007 in English and held by 40 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Writing is a relative latecomer to the history of language. This program tracks its emergence in Mesopotamia, China, and Mesoamerica and its spread down through the millennia via conquest -- usually violent, sometimes benign -- and colonization. The creation of creoles and pidgins resulting from the interaction of specific populations is also addressed, and speculation is made about the first things written down
Constant change( Visual )

1 edition published in 2007 in English and held by 34 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This program examines factors that contributed to the diversification and spread of languages, including early migration, the introduction of agriculture, and genes. Language transfer from mother to child and from one population to the next is also investigated, along with the concept of dialects and commonalities among the world's more than 6,000 languages
Particle physics( Visual )

2 editions published between 1991 and 2004 in English and held by 15 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Quantum mechanics described phenomena of infinite smallness and provided a coherent description of the atom and the interactions of its constituent parts as well as a standard model that unified three of the four forces at work in nature, conflicting with gravitation. Includes interviews with Murray Gell-Mann, Steven Weinberg, Burton Richter, Ugo Amaldi, Pierre Dariulat and others
