"In 1920, Ima Hogg began an extensive collection of art and antiques that would chronicle America's tastes, styles, and customs from colonial times to the Victorian era. The daughter of a Texas governor, Miss Hogg continued to acquire works for her magnificent Houston home, Bayou Bend, until her death in 1975 at the age of ninety-three. Today Bayou Bend is owned and operated by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and is regarded as one of the country's foremost collections of Americana. This handsome and richly illustrated book documents this extraordinary collection in its entirety for the first time." "Paintings by such prominent artists as John Smibert, John Singleton Copley, Charles Willson Peale, and Gilbert Stuart are included, many of which are reproduced here in color for the first time. Exceptional examples of metalwork, including notable pieces by Paul Revere and the celebrated firm of Tiffany & Co., are joined by an extraordinary selection of prints, drawings, textiles, glass, and ceramics." "This volume will be of great interest to the general public and collectors as well as to students and scholars."--Jacket

Bayou Bend Gardens in Houston, Texas, is one of the most beautiful public gardens in the United States. Originally conceived in 1926 by the legendary Texas collector and philanthropist, Miss Ima Hogg (18821975), to surround Bayou Bend, her magnificent home, the gardens are a splendid oasis along Houston?s Buffalo Bayou. An active and adventurous gardener, Miss Hogg supervised the plans for the eight formal gardens that are set among the woods and ravines bordering the estate. The gardens feature a variety of native and imported plants, including the azaleas, camellias, magnolias and crape myrtles for which Bayou Bend has become famous. Bayou Bend is situated in the heart of River Oaks, which was a remote and tranquil suburb of Houston when it was originally developed in the 1920s and is now a stately enclave in the nation?s fourthlargest city. In 1957, Miss Hogg bequeathed her home and gardens to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Fully renovated and conserved, the house displays one of the nation?s premier collections of American fine and decorative arts from 16201870

"The art of furniture making flourished in Texas during the mid-nineteenth century. To document this rich heritage of locally made furniture, Miss Ima Hogg, the well-known philanthropist and collector of American decorative arts, enlisted Lonn Taylor and David B. Warren to research early Texas furniture and its makers. After more than a decade of investigation, they published Texas Furniture in 1975, and it quickly became the authoritative reference on this subject. An updated edition, Texas Furniture, Volume One, was issued in the spring of 2012"--Provided by publisher
