Ervin Győri(

7 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 445 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Discrete mathematics, including (combinatorial) number theory and set theory has always been a stronghold of Hungarian mathematics. The present volume honouring Vera Sos and Andras Hajnal contains survey articles (with classical theorems and stateoftheart results) and cutting edge expository research papers with new theorems and proofs in the area of the classical Hungarian subjects, like extremal combinatorics, colorings, combinatorial number theory, etc. The open problems and the latest results in the papers inspire further research. The volume is recommended to experienced specialists as well as to young researchers and students

Erdős centennial by
László Lovász(
)
7 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 320 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Paul Erdős was one of the most influential mathematicians of the twentieth century, whose work in number theory, combinatorics, set theory, analysis, and other branches of mathematics has determined the development of large areas of these fields. In 1999, a conference was organized to survey his work, his contributions to mathematics, and the farreaching impact of his work on many branches of mathematics. On the 100th anniversary of his birth, this volume undertakes the almost impossible task to describe the ways in which problems raised by him and topics initiated by him (indeed, whole branches of mathematics) continue to flourish. Written by outstanding researchers in these areas, these papers include extensive surveys of classical results as well as of new developments."Page [4] of cover

Real analysis : foundations and functions of one variable by
Miklós Laczkovich(
)
15 editions published between 2015 and 2017 in 4 languages and held by 283 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Based on courses given at Eötvös Loránd University (Hungary) over the past 30 years, this introductory textbook develops the central concepts of the analysis of functions of one variable systematically, with many examples and illustrations, and in a manner that builds upon, and sharpens, the students' mathematical intuition. The modular organization of the book makes it adaptable for either semester or yearlong introductory courses, while the wealth of material allows for it to be used at various levels of student sophistication in all programs where analysis is a part of the curriculum, including teachers' education. In the spirit of learningbydoing, Real Analysis includes more than 500 engaging exercises for the student keen on mastering the basics of analysis. There are frequent hints and occasional complete solutions provided for the more challenging exercises making it an ideal choice for independent study. The book includes a solid grounding in the basics of logic and proofs, sets, and real numbers, in preparation for a rigorous study of the main topics: limits, continuity, rational functions and transcendental functions, differentiation, and integration. Numerous historical notes and applications to other areas of mathematics, and to physics, are given, thereby demonstrating the practical scope and power of mathematical analysis

Real analysis : series, functions of several variables, and applications by
Miklós Laczkovich(
)
8 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 211 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book develops the theory of multivariable analysis, building on the single variable foundations established in the companion volume, Real Analysis: Foundations and Functions of One Variable. Together, these volumes form the first English edition of the popular Hungarian original, Valós Analízis I & II, based on courses taught by the authors at Eötvös Loránd University, Hungary, for more than 30 years. Numerous exercises are included throughout, offering ample opportunities to master topics by progressing from routine to difficult problems. Hints or solutions to many of the more challenging exercises make this book ideal for independent study, or further reading. Intended as a sequel to a course in single variable analysis, this book builds upon and expands these ideas into higher dimensions. The modular organization makes this text adaptable for either a semester or yearlong introductory course. Topics include: differentiation and integration of functions of several variables; infinite numerical series; sequences and series of functions; and applications to other areas of mathematics. Many historical notes are given and there is an emphasis on conceptual understanding and context, be it within mathematics itself or more broadly in applications, such as physics. By developing the student's intuition throughout, many definitions and results become motivated by insights from their context

Recent trends in combinatorics : the legacy of Paul Erdős by
Ervin Győri(
Book
)
7 editions published between 2001 and 2009 in English and held by 195 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This is a collection of surveys and research papers on topics of interest in combinatorics, given at a conference in Mátraháza, Hungary. Originally published in journal form, it is here reissued as a book due to its special interest. It is dedicated to Paul Erdös, who attended the conference and who is represented by two articles in the collection, including one, unfinished, which he was writing on the eve of his sudden death. Erdös was one of the greatest mathematicians of his century and often the subject of anecdotes about his somewhat unusual lifestyle. A preface, written by friends and colleagues, gives a flavour of his life, including many such stories, and also describes the broad outline and importance of his work in combinatorics and other related fields. Here is a succinct introduction to important ideas in combinatorics for researchers and graduate students

Colloquia Mathematica Societatis Jânos Bolyai, 37: Finite and Infinite Sets, Vol. I focuses on the principles, operations, and approaches involved in finite and infinite sets. The selection first elaborates on essential chains and squares, cellular automata in trees, almost disjoint families of countable sets, and application of Lovasz local lemma. Discussions focus on deleting operations, number of all and selfdual Echains, transversality of Echains and Esquares, and binary Echains and Esquares. The text then elaborates on induced subgraphs, inverse extremal digraph problems, two Sperne

Irregularities of Partitions by
Gábor Halász(
)
1 edition published in 1989 in English and held by 57 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The problem of the uniform distribution of sequences, first attacked by Hardy, Littlewood and Weyl in the early years of this century, has now become an important part of number theory. This is also true of Ramsey theory in combinatorics, whose origins can be traced back to Schur in the same period. Both concern the distribution of sequences of elements in certain collection of subsets. Quite recently these strands have become interwoven, borne fruit and developed links with such other fields as ergodic theory, geometry, information theory and algorithm theory. This volume is the homogeneous summary of a workshop held at Fertöd in Hungary, which brought together people working on various aspects of Ramsey theory on the one hand and on the theory of uniform distribution and related aspects of number theory on the other. The volume consists of 14 papers, 5 on the combinatorial, 5 on the number theoretical aspects and 4 on various generalizations, and a list of unsolved problems. This authoritative stateoftheart report is addressed to researchers and graduate students
