New challenges for maturing democracies in Korea and Taiwan by Larry Jay Diamond( )

11 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 1,752 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

New Challenges for Maturing Democracies in Korea and Taiwan takes a creative and comparative view of the new challenges and dynamics confronting these maturing democracies. Numerous works deal with political change in the two societies individually, but few adopt a comparative approach--and most focus mainly on the emergence of democracy or the politics of the democratization processes. This book, utilizing a broad, interdisciplinary approach, pays careful attention to post-democratization phenomena and the key issues that arise in maturing democracies. What emerges is a picture of two evolving democracies, now secure, but still imperfect and at times disappointing to their citizens--a common feature and challenge of democratic maturation. The book demonstrates that it will fall to the elected political leaders of these two countries to rise above narrow and immediate party interests to mobilize consensus and craft policies that will guide the structural adaptation and reinvigoration of the society and economy in an era that clearly presents for both countries not only steep challenges but also new opportunities. About the author Larry Diamond is a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution and the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford. He is also Director of Stanford's Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law. Gi-Wook Shin is Director of the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center, the Tong Yang, Korea Foundation, and Korea Stanford Alumni Chair of Korean Studies, and Professor of Sociology at Stanford. Publisher's note
Democracy in decline? by Larry Jay Diamond( )

15 editions published between 2015 and 2016 in English and held by 1,242 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"For almost a decade, Freedom House's annual survey has highlighted a decline in democracy in most regions of the globe. While some analysts draw upon this evidence to argue that the world has entered a "democratic recession," others dispute that interpretation, emphasizing instead democracy's success in maintaining the huge gains it made during the last quarter of the twentieth century. Discussion of this question has moved beyond disputes about how many countries should be classified as democratic to embrace a host of wider concerns about the health of democracy: the poor economic and political performance of advanced democracies, the new self-confidence and assertiveness of a number of leading authoritarian countries, and a geopolitical weakening of democracies relative to these resurgent authoritarians. In Democracy in Decline?, eight of the world's leading public intellectuals and scholars of democracy--Francis Fukuyama, Robert Kagan, Philippe C. Schmitter, Steven Levitsky, Lucan Way, Thomas Carothers, and editors Larry Diamond and Marc F. Plattner--explore these concerns and offer competing viewpoints about the state of democracy today. This short collection of essays is essential reading for anyone wanting to understand the latest thinking on one of the most critical questions of our era"--

The spirit of democracy : the struggle to build free societies throughout the world by Larry Jay Diamond( Book )

20 editions published between 2008 and 2013 in English and held by 869 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1974, nearly three-quarters of all countries were dictatorships; today, more than half are democracies. Yet recent efforts to promote democracy have stumbled, and many democratic governments are faltering. Here, social scientist Diamond examines how and why democracy progresses. He demonstrates that the desire for democracy runs deep, even in very poor countries, and that seemingly entrenched regimes like Iran and China could become democracies within a generation. He also dissects the causes of the "democratic recession" in critical states, including the crime-infested oligarchy in Russia and the strong-armed populism of Venezuela. Diamond cautions that arrogance and inconsistency have undermined America's aspirations to promote democracy. To spur a renewed democratic boom, he urges vigorous support of good governance--the rule of law, security, protection of individual rights, and shared economic prosperity--and free civic organizations. Only then will the spirit of democracy be secured.--From publisher description

Africa presents a mixed picture. A number of African countries have been convulsed by high-profile crises, while others have continued making progress on difficult path toward democratic stability. Democratization in Africa: Progress and Retreat brings into focus complex landscape of African politics by pairing broad analytical surveys with country-specific case studies, most previously published in the Journal of Democracy and all written by prominent Africanists with deep knowledge of the continent and their subject countries. Thematic chapters address major forces working for and against African democracy: phenomenon of "frontier Africa"; presidentialism; rise of independent legislatures; rule of law versus the "big man"; the institutionalization of political power; decline of military coups; paradox of growth without prosperity; and roles of formal and informal institutions. Countries examined include Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somaliland, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. This is an essential primer for students of African politics and those interested in future of democracy--Publisher's description

Written entirely by individuals who served between mid-2004 and mid-2005 at Headquarters, Multinational Force--Iraq, in Baghdad's Green Zone, the eight chapters of this volume document the failures of the American occupation of Iraq, summarized by editor Mowle as consisting particularly of "lack of cross-functional strategic planning, insufficient understanding of the situation, and insufficient cross-functional control over command and execution." The text focuses on the period of the existence of the Iraqi Interim Government, from the June 2004 "handover of sovereignty" to the selection of the Iraqi Transitional Government in May 2005 and contains chapters that discuss political failures of planning, occupational authority attempts to develop intelligence, the work of training the Iraqi Security Forces, the role of elections in bringing about a government that occupation forces hoped would be seen as legitimate by Iraqis, and the lack of strategic thinking concerning the opportunities opened up by elections and the new governme
