A history of baroque music by George J Buelow( Book )

10 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 903 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A History of Baroque Music is a detailed treatment of the music of the Baroque era, with particular focus on the seventeenth century. The author's approach is a history of musical style with an emphasis on musical scores. The book is divided initially by time period into early and later Baroque (1600-1700 and 1700-1750 respectively), and secondarily by country and composer. An introductory chapter discusses stylistic continuity with the late Renaissance and examines the etymology of the term "Baroque." The concluding chapter on the composer Telemann addresses the stylistic shift that led to the end of the Baroque and the transition into the Classical period."--Résumé de l'éditeur
Musicology and performance by Paul Henry Lang( Book )

8 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 604 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Arriving in the United States at age twenty-seven, Hungarian-born Paul Henry Lang (1901-1991) went on to exert a powerful influence on musical life and scholarship in his adopted country for more than six decades. As professor of musicology at Columbia University, editor of the Musical Quarterly, a founder of the American Musicological Society, and chief music critic of the New York Herald Tribune, Lang became one of America's foremost musical scholars and commentators. This anthology of his previously uncollected writings includes essays written throughout his career on a full array of music subjects, as well as unpublished chapters of the book on performance practice that he was writing at the time of his death
The late baroque era : from the 1680s to 1740( Book )

19 editions published between 1993 and 1994 in English and held by 570 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book examines music of the period usually defined as the late Baroque. Spanning historical developments from approximately 1680 to around the 1740s, the chapters are focused on the major musical centres at this time, and on the major regions of economic and social development. As a continuation of cultural processes begun at the start of the 17th century, the "late Baroque" is a period largely of re-examination and development of forms and styles already established. The essays here examine the results of the political and social forces stimulating and shaping the extraordinary outpourings of music not only for the major courts and churches of Europe but also for the culturally sophisticated middle classes. Viewed from one perspective, the music of the late Baroque can be seen to unfold through the impact of operatic styles and forms on all music, sacred and secular. - Back cover
