The land of Israel in Bible, history, and theology : studies in honour of Ed Noort by J. van Ruiten( )

11 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 1,493 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book deals with many aspects of the land of Israel. In the first part, the emphasis is on descriptions of the land in Joshua and other books of the Hebrew anf Greek Bible. In the second part, the focus shifts to the land in history and theology: reception-history of biblical texts dealing with the land, archaeology of Palestine, and theological-hermeneutical implications of taking the land traditions of the Bible seriously. The result is a rich collection of articles on one of the main themes of the Old Testament; a theme that has a fascinating, although not always unproblematic reception history
Perspectives in the study of the Old Testament and early Judiasm : a symposium in honour of Adams S. van der Woude on the occasion of his 70th birthday by Edward Noort( Book )

"This volume contains the papers presented to a symposium organized by the Theological Faculty of the University of Groningen on the occasion of the seventieth birthday of Adam S. van der Woude, former Professor of Old Testament and Early Judaism and former head of the Qumran Institute at the same Faculty." "The essays, eight in English and four in German, explore (through case studies) the developments over the last few years in the different areas of study of the Old Testament and of Early Judaism, observe the new perspectives opened in these areas and map the directions in which the research will be moving in the third millennium."--BOOK JACKET

Sodom's sin : Genesis 18-19 and its interpretations( Book )

6 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 171 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Sodom's Sin is devoted to the receptions of and reflections on the story of Sodom and Gomorrah as told in Genesis 18 and 19. Two articles discuss intertextual reactions to the Sodom narrative within the Hebrew Bible. Five contributions examine readings and rewritings of the Sodom narrative in early Jewish, Christian and Islamic writings: Jubilees, the Dead Sea Scrolls, the New Testament (Revelation 11), Targumim and early Koran commentaries. Two articles focus on separate themes: the punishment of the Dead Sea and the prohibition on looking back. Finally, two articles that focus on Peter Damian and Marcel Proust's Sodome et Gomorrhe 1 describe the later reception of the sin of Sodom as homosexuality. A bibliography of recent works completes the volume."--BOOK JACKET
The Book of Joshua by Colloquium Biblicum Lovaniense( Book )

10 editions published in 2012 in 4 languages and held by 156 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Book of Joshua contains the papers of the Colloquium Biblicum Lovaniense 2010 on the Book of Joshua and the Land of Israel. Not for the sake of plurality as such, but as a signal of the state of the art in Joshua research in the post-Noth era this volume functions as a platform for different approaches in exegetical and historical studies. Text-critical, redaction-critical and compositional studies, as well as final text reading are offered. The papers are grouped together in six thematic clusters: Text, Versions and Terminology; Tradition, Composition and Context; History, Archaeology and Geography; Crossing the Jordan; Jericho and Violence; History of Reception. Starting with the question which text we read (MT, LXX, 4QJosha) the book engages not only in the recent Pentateuch-Hexateuch debate, but also in the problematic fields of (divine) violence and the land. Therefore an important section deals with the history of reception, starting with the Book of Maccabees, Philo, Josephus, the New Testament and ending up with two examples of reception in recent times. Die Welt der Hebräischen Bibel Umfeld - Inhalte - Grundthemen by Reinhard Achenbach( Book )

2 editions published in 2017 in German and held by 66 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A comprehensive, reliable and up-to-date scholarly introduction to the world of the Hebrew Bible - its cultural setting, literary form, social backgrounds, ritual nature, and its images of humanity and of God. The 32 sections are written by selected specialists from various denominations and all German-speaking countries. Within a manageable scope, they discuss wide-ranging topics such as 'The Bible and history', 'Bible, Judaism, Christianity' and 'God's love and wrath'. Brief footnotes, special bibliographies and an index help the reader link together and deepen the information provided. The book offers a compact but nuanced overview of the 'Old' or 'First Testament', for students, those involved in the church or with cultural interests, those who are distanced from the Bible and also people curious about religion, academics, and non-academics
Maleachi by Aaron Schart( Book )

2 editions published between 2019 and 2020 in German and held by 56 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

1 Esdras by Dieter Böhler( )

4 editions published between 2014 and 2016 in German and English and held by 33 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
