Peter Sculthorpe tells Charles Southwood how he became well known through his composition, Sun Music. He purged his music of romantic feeling. He is only interested in European music up to the time of Monteverdi. He has been influenced by Asian music, especially Indonesian. The key to all his music is in the bass line. In discussing his composition, "Kakadu", he talks about American interest in Australian music, which follows American interest in Aboriginal painting.
