Sir Douglas Haig's despatches : (December 1915-April 1919) by Douglas Haig Haig( Book )

16 editions published between 1919 and 2012 in English and held by 352 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Field-Marshal Haig commanded the British Empire forces through from 1915 to 1919; his period in charge of the men under his command has been the subject of much debate ever since the First World War ended. To some he was a "Butcher" overseeing the bloodbaths of the Somme and Passchendaele, to others he was a stoic leader faced with almost insurmountable difficulties of the warfare of the age. Whichever opinion holds sway in the public psyche, his despatches from the front, are gripping reading that drive to the heart of his character. Often fulsome of praise for the men under his command, Haig was reticent to give vent to failures in public; the despatches are very revelaing, whilst capturing all of the swings of fortune on the Western Front

Douglas Haig : war diaries and letters, 1914-1918 by Douglas Haig Haig( Book )

5 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The war diaries of Douglas Haig, Commander-in-Chief of the British Army on the Western Front for the final three years of the First World War, begin with the early, tentative days of the British Expeditionary Force in July-August 1914. They end after the Armistice, in November 1918, with the Allied forces finally victorious." "Here are his day-by-day accounts of the key battles of the war, not least the Somme, Passchendaele and the victorious offensives of 1918. His diaries also illustrate Haig's dealing with the politicians and cast light on both of the wartime British Prime Ministers - he records Asquith's stupendous capacity for alcohol, and, on Lloyd George, he is succinct: 'I have no great opinion of L.G. as a man or leader.' He abhorred political double-speak and found a ready supporter in the King, where there was a mutual trust." "Douglas Haig: War Diaries and Letters: 1914-1918 brings to modern readers a contemporary account of the First World War written by the soldier who ensured Allied victory."--BOOK JACKET
Douglas Haig : architect of victory by Walter Reid( Book )

This biography is the first study of Haig that takes into account a huge amount of modern scholarship. It presents a more rounded picture of the professional and the private man than has previously been available. What emerges is a picture of a comprehensible human being, not necessarily particularly likeable, but honourably ambitious, able and intelligent, and the man more than any other responsible for delivering a British-led victory in 1918 over a continental opponent on a scale that has never been matched before or since
