Antisemitism : its history and causes by Bernard Lazare( Book )

35 editions published between 1903 and 2016 in 5 languages and held by 509 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Bernard Lazare's controversial magnum opus, originally published in France in 1894, asks why the Jews have aroused such hatred for three thousand years. The journalist, though severed from his Jewish upbringing, was fiercely committed to social justice and could not ignore a shocking antisemitism in the fin-de-siecle circles he knew. In searching for its historic causes, he was also searching for his own roots and place in the world. Lazare begins his "impartial study" by considering whatever in the Jewish character might be to blame for antisemitism. Then he looks outward to those nations among which the Israelites dispersed, examining the different faces of antisemitism from Greco-Roman antiquity to the end of the nineteenth century. Lazare brings his research and study to bear on whatever form antisemitism has taken: ethnic, nationalist, economic, social, literary, philosophical. Recognizing that antisemitism is fundamentally based on fear of the stranger and the need for a scapegoat, Lazare concludes with a surprising scenario for the future. This remarkable book conveys Lazare's own spiritual growth. France's Dreyfus Affair in the 1890s would galvanize him to a passionate battle against antisemitism

Le fumier de Job by Bernard Lazare( Book )

27 editions published between 1928 and 2006 in French and Spanish and held by 174 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Le fumier de Job" (pp. 13-89), an unfinished manuscript by Lazare, briefly describes the history and persecution of the Jews, explaining the evolution of negative stereotypes and Jewish behavior in response to persecution. Calls antisemitism a form of Christian hypocrisy, which blames all vices on the Jew. Dismisses assimilation or conversion as solutions, since the Jews would then be persecuted as converts. States that the Jews are a nation with a common history of persecution, and they have to fight antisemitism. "Contre l'antisémitisme" (pp. 111-145), first published in Paris in 1896, relates that the Church held the Jews responsible for the triumph of the secular French republic, and that French antisemitism was an expression of fear of competition in the professions and in finance. Includes reactions of support for Dreyfus and against the antisemitism of Drumont and his "Libre Parole". The appended essay by Hannah Arendt, "Herzl et Lazare" (pp. 149-156), emphasizes that although Lazare was brought back to Judaism, as was Herzl, by the Dreyfus Affair, instead of advocating a Jewish state Lazare called for the Jews to stay where they were and fight antisemitism
Contre l'antisémitisme : histoire d'une polemique by Bernard Lazare( Book )

20 editions published between 1896 and 2015 in French and held by 132 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Presents two texts by Lazare, "Antisémitisme et révolution" and "Contre l'antisémitisme", first published in 1896 as a response to polemics surrounding his major opus, "L'antisémitisme, son histoire et ses causes" (1894). The responses are addressed to Drumont. Pp. 79-113 contain Charles Péguy's portrait of Lazare from 1910 and pp. 115-122 a text from 1938 by P.-V. Stock on Lazare and the Dreyfus Affair. Pp. 123-126 contain Lazare's will. In the introduction (pp. 7-16), Pierre Guillaume states that the two texts complement "L'antisémitisme, son histoire et ses causes", also reprinted by him in 1982, a decision harshly criticized in the French press. Mainly Jewish intellectuals argued that Lazare's later engagement for Dreyfus, his defense of Oriental Jews, and his Zionism proved that he had modified his views on the Jews as being partly responsible for the hostility directed at them. The book was published as part of this debate
