Brahms begann im Sommerurlaub 1877 mit der Komposition seiner 2. Sinfonie, die bereits im Dezember desselben Jahres mit großem Erfolg uraufgeführt wurde. Das Werk zählt zu den populärsten Sinfonien Brahms'. Die transparente Instrumentierung und der häufige Einsatz der Holzbläser unterstreichen den heiteren, fast schon pastoralen Charakter dieses Werks. Drei Jahre später komponierte Brahms zwei Ouvertüren, die Akademische Festouvertüre op. 80 und die Tragische Ouvertüre op. 81, von denen Brahms selbst sagte: "Die eine lacht, die andere weint." Die Akademische Festouvertüre, die oft auf den Konzertprogrammen steht, entstand aus Anlass der Verleihung der Ehrendoktorwürde durch die Universität von Breslau und verarbeitet Zitate aus mehreren Studentenliedern. Das Budapest Festival Orchestra, das sich unter Ivan Fischer zu einem der renommiertesten Klangkörper entwickelt hat, erhält mit seinen zahlreichen Einspielungen großer klassischer und romantischer Sinfonien immer wieder die Zustimmung und Begeisterung der Kritiker
