Films by Scripps Institution of Oceanography( Visual )

1 edition published in 1965 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

On May 15, 1963, NASA astronaut Gordon Cooper reported that he could see vehicles raising dust along the U.S.-Mexico border from his Mercury VII space capsule. This observation was disputed by some scientists who suggested that it was not possible to make such an observation in orbit, and by others who felt that human vision might be distorted in space. NASA contracted with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Visibility Laboratory at UCSD to investigate the observation and perform a visual acuity experiment to test sight in flight. Visibility Laboratory scientists confirmed 84% probability that a trained pilot could correctly interpret dust patterns as vehicles and that Cooper's observation was consistent with Border Patrol vehicles operating that day in El Centro, California. The Laboratory designed the Gemini Visual Acuity Experiment for Gemini flights 5 and 7 in 1965. The accession consists of 7 16 mm. films documenting the Gemini Visual Acuity Experiment. Six of these films are silent and record specific parts of the experiment, and one film is a 30-minute color sound film describing the experiment as a whole. The accession also includes a video transfer master videocassette of the 30-minute summary film, and a videocassette use copy. The accession includes images of Gemini astronauts Frank Borman, Charles Conrad, Gordon Cooper and James Lovell. It includes images of Visibility Laboratory scientists includind Roswell W. Austin, Seibert Q. Duntley, John Taylor and Robert L. Stapleford. The access includes film footage depicting the Visibility Laboratory in San Diego, California, and test sites at Laredo, Texas and Woodleigh, Australia
