Constraints on variables in syntax by
John Robert Ross(
Book
)
29 editions published between 1967 and 1968 in English and held by 212 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In attempting to define "syntactic variable," the author bases his discussion on the assumption that syntactic facts are a collection of two types of rules--context-free phrase structure rules (generating underlying or deep phrase markers) and grammatical transformations, which map underlying phrase markers onto superficial (or surface) phrase markers. The thesis presents a set of constraints on variables--universal and language-particular--and discusses how they affect syntactic rules. He points out that chomsky's a-over-a principle is both too strong and too weak, because the principle cannot be extended to account for the phenomena which the author calls "syntactic islands." The entire discussion centers around rules and constraints, which are actually limits on the power of variables that can appear in certain types of rules. It is shown that constraints, especially with the notion of "command," divide phrase markers into "islands," suggesting that these "islands" behave like psycholinguistic entities. The author prefers to make the relationship between grammaticality and acceptability more abstract than previously assumed by transformationalists. This thesis was prepared as partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of doctor of philosophy at the massachusetts institute of technology. (Fb)

Adjectives as noun phrases by
John Robert Ross(
Book
)
3 editions published in 1966 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This analysis of underlying syntactic structure is based on the assumption that the parts of speech called "verbs" and "adjectives" are two subcategories of one major lexical category, "predicate." From this assumption, the hypothesis is advanced that, in languages exhibiting the copula, the deep structure of sentences containing predicate adjectives is identical in all significant respects to that of sentences with predicates containing verbs. This implies the claims that "be" is a true verb and that it has a deep structure similar to such lexical items as "try," and "know." Six arguments from widely varying areas of syntax are used to support the hypothesis. This paper was presented at the winter meeting of the linguistic society of america (new york, december 28, 1966). (kl)

Ablaut in German Strong Verbs by
John Robert Ross(
Book
)
4 editions published between 1960 and 1967 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
An analysis of ablaut in german verbs is developed within the framework of transformational generative grammar. The hypothesis states that if a verb stem is known not to be regular, the type of ablaut it undergoes can to a large extent be predicted on the basis of syntactic or phonological features. The forms accounted for are all the irregular verb stems on pages 805-812 in "cassell's new german and english dictionary," (1939 edition). Halle's theory of phonology is used, as well as chomsky's notion of the complex symbol. Types of ablaut are examined and a system of features is developed to classify the principal parts of the verbs. (Kl)

This paper investigates a type of grammatical ill-formedness in English which is traceable to the repetition, under certain specified conditions, of present participles, E.G. the verb "continue" cannot occur with participles if it is in the present progressive. The solution to generalizing about ill-formedness of this type is by means of a derivational constraint which is formulated in such a way as to link certain features of remote structure to certain features of surface structure. The violation is not stated in terms of a restriction on transformations but rather as a static filter on the output of the syntactic component. This paper refines and formally states the requisite derivational constraint so that it is not too powerful. The author examines the consequences for linguistic theor y of postulating such a derivational constraint. The argument for using such a constraint, details on its development, and references are presented. (Author/VM)
