Dark matter in the universe by John N Bahcall( )

17 editions published between 1987 and 2004 in English and held by 1,904 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

If standard gravitational theory is correct, then most of the matterin the universe is in an unidentified form which does not emit enoughlight to have been detected by current instrumentation. This book isthe second edition of the lectures given at the 4th Jerusalem WinterSchool for Theoretical Physics, with new material added. The lecturesare devoted to the "missing matter" problem in the universe, thesearch to understand dark matter. The goal of this volume is to makecurrent research work on unseen matter accessible to students withoutprior experience in this area and to provide insights for
Statistical mechanics of membranes and surfaces by David R Nelson( )

18 editions published between 1989 and 2004 in English and held by 1,829 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This invaluable book explores the delicate interplay between geometry and statistical mechanics in materials such as microemulsions, wetting and growth interfaces, bulk lyotropic liquid crystals, chalcogenide glasses and sheet polymers, using tools from the fields of polymer physics, differential geometry, field theory and critical phenomena. Several chapters have been updated relative to the classic 1989 edition. Moreover, there are now three entirely new chapters on effects of anisotropy and heterogeneity, on fixed connectivity membranes and on triangulated surface models of fluctuating me

The strongest magnetic fields in the universe by V. S Beskin( )

8 editions published in 2016 in English and German and held by 218 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume extends the ISSI series on magnetic fields in the Universe into the domain of what are by far the strongest fields in the Universe, and stronger than any field that could be produced on Earth. The chapters describe the magnetic fields in non-degenerate strongly magnetized stars, degenerate stars (such as white dwarfs and neutron stars), exotic members called magnetars, and in their environments, as well as magnetic fields in the environments of black holes. These strong fields have a profound effect on the behavior of matter, visible in particular in highly variable processes like radiation in all known wavelengths, including Gamma-Ray bursts. The generation and structure of such strong magnetic fields and effects on the environment are also described
Physics in higher dimensions by Tsvi Piran( Book )

17 editions published between 1985 and 1986 in English and held by 197 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In the last few years there has been a revival of interest in the old idea that spacetime may have more than four dimensions, all but four having been curled up into a small circumference. In this view the various particles and interactions we see at ordinary energies arise from a simple, perhaps purely geometrical, theory in higher dimensions. This idea has profound implications for elementary particle physics and cosmology, and raises challenging problems of mathematics. These matters were the topic of the Second Jerusalem Winter School of Theoretical Physics."--Publisher's website

Two dimensional quantum gravity and random surfaces : Jerusalem Winter School for Theoretical Physics, Jerusalem, Israel, 27 Dec. 90-4 Jan. 91 by David J Gross( Book )

13 editions published in 1992 in English and Italian and held by 150 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In the past few years there has been much study of random two dimensional surfaces. These provide simple models of string theories with a few degrees of freedom, as well as toy models of quantum gravity. They have possible applications to the statistical mechanics of phase boundaries and to the development of an effective string description of QCD. Recently, methods have been developed to treat these theories nonperturbatively, based on discrete triangulations of the surfaces that can be generated by simple matrix models. Exact solutions with a rich mathematical structure have emerged. All these matters are discussed fully in this book."--

The Eighth Marcel Grossmann Meeting : on recent developments in theoretical and experimental general relativity, gravitation, and relativistic field theories : proceedings of the meeting held at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, 22-27 June 1997 by Tsvi Piran( Book )

19 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 87 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Since 1975, the Marcel Grossmann Meetings have been organized to provide opportunities for discussing recent advances in gravitation, general relativity and relativistic field theories, emphasizing mathematical foundations, physical predictions and experimental tests. The objective of these meetings is to facilitate exchange among scientists that may deepen our understanding of space–time structures and to review the status of ongoing experiments aimed at testing Einstein's theory of gravitation from either the ground or space. The Eighth Marcel Grossmann Meeting took place on 22–27 June, 1997, at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel. The scientific program included 25 plenary talks and 40 parallel sessions during which 400 papers were presented. The papers that appear in this book cover all aspects of gravitation, from mathematical issues to recent observations and experiments."--Publisher's website

Wolf prize in physics( Book )

2 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 35 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Wolf Foundation began its activities in 1976, with an initial endowment donated by the Wolf family. Within a very short period of time after its initiation, the Wolf prize has become one of the major signs for recognition of scientific achievements and excellence. This volume is devoted to a selection of Wolf Prize laureates in Physics and each has included two respective major publications as well as a commentary written by the laureate describing his scientific career. Readers around the world are provided a unique opportunity to get a glimpse of how scientific processes work in physics, and to comprehend how these laureates have left an indelible imprint on scientific history. Statistical mechanics of membranes and surfaces : Jerusalem Winter School for Theoretical Physics, Jerusalem, 28 Dec. 87-6 Jan. 88 by Jerusalem Winter School for Theoretical Physics( Book )

8 editions published in 1989 in English and held by 18 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Fifth Jerusalem Winter School on the Statistical Mechanics of Membranes and Surfaces was held from December 28, 1987 to January 6, 1988. The School focused on the theory of the highly convoluted surface fluctuations which appear in such diverse condensed matter system as microemulsions, wetting and growth interfaces, bulk lyotropic liquid crystals, chalcogenide glasses and sheet polymers. The delicate interplay between geometry and statistical mechanics in these systems can be described using tools from the fields og polymer physics, differential geometry, and critical phenomena. Our theoretical understanding of these problems can be tested by a wide variety of laboratory experiments, which probe fluctuations ranging from relatively benign capillary waves at interfaces, to wild undulations in biological membranes. The School was fortunate to have many lecturers who were outstanding teachers as well as distinguished scientists. Virtually all the lecturers contributed manuscripts to this volume, which can serve as a useful introduction for theorists and experimentalists who wish to learn more about this rapidly developing field
