The music of Estonian-born composer Arvo Part is a unique and powerful voice in the contemporary world. Using a tonal idiom based on a mixture of scales and triads, Part created a style that he calls 'tintinnabulli'. Listening to it reminds one of the passionate tranquillity of some Russian icon, or of certain memorable scenes in the films of Andrei Tarkovsky. In this book, the first comprehensive study of Part, Paul Hillier explores the tintinnabuli works in considerable depth. He also examines the music of the composer's earlier, somewhat neglected, serial period, and charts the steady evolution towards the 'abstract tonality' of Part's later years. In addition, a biographical chapter and discussion of topics such as Russian Orthodox spirituality, minimalism, and the influence of early music, combine to make this a standard introduction to the music of Arvo Part. Hillier also draws on his own experience of working with the composer in discussing various performance issues

Writings on music, 1965-2000 by Steve Reich( Book )

28 editions published between 2000 and 2009 in English and held by 623 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Writings on Music documents the creative journey of this thoughtful, groundbreaking composer. These 64 short pieces include Reich's 1968 essay "Music as a Gradual Process," widely considered one of the most influential pieces of music theory in the second half of the twentieth century. Subsequent essays, articles, and interviews treat Reich's early work with tape and phase shifting, showing its development into more recent work with speech melody and instrumental music. Other essays recount his exposure to non-western music - African drumming, Balinese gamelan, Hebrew cantillation - and the influence of these musics as structures and not as sounds

In C by Terry Riley( )

10 editions published between 2006 and 2007 in 3 languages and held by 347 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Adrian Utley (Portishead) brings together an orchestra of electric guitar players to interpret Terry Riley's 'In C'. Written in 1964,'In C' is one of the most influential pieces of music from the 20th Century, it established minimalism as a music genre. In C's simple musical rules - 53 musical phrases in C and no duration - allow for infinite variations. Utley's impressive Guitar Orchestra is augmented by organs and a clarinet making for a mesmeric sound experience. The effect is an organic musical experience very much created in front of the audience both fragile and thunderingly uplifting"--Publisher's website
