Anthropology and development : understanding contemporary social change by Jean-Pierre Olivier de Sardan( )

25 editions published between 2004 and 2013 in English and held by 1,796 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The central purpose of this book is to re-establish the relevance of anthropological (and indeed sociological) approaches to development processes and persuading anthropology to recognize that the study of contemporary development ought to be one of its principal concerns. Professor Olivier de Sardan argues for a socio-anthropology of change and development that is a deeply empirical, multi-dimensional, diachronic study of social groups and their interactions, combining analysis of social practices and consciousness. It has, in his view, simultaneously to be a political anthropology, a sociology of organizations, an economic anthropology, a sociology of networks, and an anthropology of conceptions and belief systems." "Following its successful publication in French (where it has run through several printings), this important book will provoke much thoughtful debate about appropriate theory and practice within Anthropology, Sociology and Development Studies. It is also particularly appropriate as an advanced text for students in these fields."--Jacket
Everyday corruption and the state : citizens and public officials in Africa by Giorgio Blundo( )

20 editions published between 2006 and 2013 in English and held by 1,608 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Daily life in Africa is governed by the 'petty' corruption of public officials in services such as health, transport or the judicial system. This study of everyday corruption in three African countries investigates the reasons for its extraordinary prevalence." "The authors construct an illuminating analytical framework around the various forms of corruption, the corruptive strategies public officials resort to, and how these forms and strategies have become embedded in daily administrative practices. They investigate the roots of the system in the growing inability of weakened states in Africa either to reward their employees adequately or to deliver expected services. They conclude that corruption in Africa today is qualitatively different from corruption in other parts of the world in its pervasiveness, its legitimations, and its huge impact on the nature of the state."--Jacket

Cash transfers in context : an anthropological perspective by Emmanuelle Piccoli( )

6 editions published in 2018 in English and Undetermined and held by 366 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Marginal in status a decade ago, cash transfer programs have become the preferred channel for delivering emergency aid or tackling poverty in low-and middle-income countries. While these programs have had positive effects, they are typical of top-down development interventions in that they impose imported and standardized norms and procedures regarding conditionality, targeting, and delivery on local contexts. This book sheds light on the crucial importance of these contexts and the many unpredicted consequences of cash transfer programs worldwide - detailing how the latter are used by actors to pursue their own strategies, and how external norms are reinterpreted, circumvented, and contested by local populations
Epistemology, fieldwork, and anthropology by Jean-Pierre Olivier de Sardan( Book )

30 editions published between 2008 and 2019 in 3 languages and held by 365 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Epistemology, Fieldwork, and Anthropology explores the space between epistemology and methodology, offering a systematic examination of the empirical foundations of interpretations in anthropology. Olivier de Sardan investigates the complex links between the observed reality, data production, and grounded theories, addressing the issues of bias management and the rigor of qualitative methods"--
Les sociétés Songhay-Zarma, Niger-Mali : chefs, guerriers, esclaves, paysans-- by Jean-Pierre Olivier de Sardan( Book )

14 editions published in 1984 in French and English and held by 155 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

9 editions published between 2003 and 2020 in French and held by 105 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Real governance and practical norms in sub-Saharan Africa : the game of rules by Tom de Herdt( Book )

14 editions published between 2015 and 2017 in English and held by 93 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Although international development discourse considers the state as a crucial development actor, there remains a significant discrepancy between the official norms of the state and public services and the actual practices of political elites and civil servants. This text interrogates the variety of ways in which state policies and legal norms have been translated into the set of practical norms which make up real governance in sub-Saharan Africa. It argues that the concept of practical norms is an appropriate tool for an ethnographic investigation of public bureaucracies, interactions between civil servants and users, and the daily functioning of the state in Africa. It demonstrates that practical norms are usually different from official norms, complementing, bypassing and even contradicting them. In addition, it explores the positive and negative effects of different aspects of this 'real governance'. This text will be of key interest to academics, students and researchers in the fields of development, political science, anthropology and development studies, African studies, international comparative studies, implementation studies, and public policy"--

10 editions published between 2003 and 2018 in French and held by 66 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
