Román seznamuje s poválečnými těžebními, sociálními a politickými problémy v uhelné pánvi polského Slezska. Na šachtě, která se značně opožďovala za plánem a kde špatná organisace pracoviště, nízké výdělky, úrazy, absence, opilství a liknavost byly běžným zjevem, zavede nový dělnický ředitel změny tak pronikavé, že během několika měsíců šachta plán nejen splní, ale z jejího osazenstva se stane uvědomělý a stmelený kolektiv. Tento proces zachytil autor na příbězích samotných havířů, na nichž ukázal, že příčinou nechuti k práci jsou především nedostatečná bezpečnostní a hygienická opatření na pracovištích, zastaralé pracovní metody, rozháraný rodinný život a špatné životní podmínky hornických rodin, které se liknavé konservativní správní orgány nesnaží napravit a které může nejlépe pochopit dělnický ředitel, který sám jako havíř pracoval. - Polská státní cena
