Lee Teng-hui and Taiwan's quest for identity by Shih-shan Henry Tsai( )

20 editions published between 2005 and 2007 in English and Chinese and held by 676 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The book is also a metaphor for present-day Taiwan as the author takes a balanced and critical stance in discussing such timely and sensitive issues as: Is Lee Teng-hui an opportunistic recidivist who is interested only is his own self-preservation, or is he a hero who not only propelled Taiwan into a new era, but also constructed a new national identity for the islanders? Are the multi-ethnic islanders culturally "Chinese" or are they "Taiwanese"? Is Taiwan historically and politically part of "China" or does it have its own history and identity, and deserves international recognition as an independent sovereign country?"--Jacket

"For centuries the island of Taiwan, 100 miles off the Asian mainland, has been a cross-roads for traders and settlers, pirates and military schemers from around the world. Unlike China, with its long tradition of keeping foreigners out, Taiwan has a long history of interaction, both hostile and friendly, with other seafaring nations near and far. 'Maritime Taiwan' captures the full drama and details of this remarkable history. [It] also discusses the significant impact of American military, economic, educational, and technological aid on Taiwan's development, and addresses the island's continued importance in maintaining the U.S. hegemony in East Asia."--Publisher description

Chinese Americans are the migrants and their descendants who migrated from China to the United States, starting in approximately 1848. This file contains fifteen documents covering the time period from ca. 1848 to the 1980s. These documents deal with Chinatowns located in several American cities (e.g., San Francisco, New York City), plus additional data on the Chinese American populations in such regional areas as the Monterey Bay region of California, and Hawaii. Much of the file deals with the history of the migration of the Chinese to the United States and the restrictive immigration policies applied to them by the United States government. Additional topics that appear in all the documents in this file are those of the discriminatory and racist practices imposed on the Chinese immigrants by the Caucasian American society, cultural adaptation and acculturation, Chinese associations, and ethnic businesses (e.g., restaurants, laundries, and groceries)
