High energy astrophysics : American and Soviet perspectives ; proceedings from the US USSR Workshop on High Energy Astrophysics, June 18 - July 1, 1989 by Walter H Lewin( )

7 editions published between 1900 and 1991 in English and held by 1,566 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

During the past decade, the field of astrophysics has progressed at an impressive rate. This was reflected by the topics discussed at the workshop from which this book eminated. These topics include the inflationary universe; the large-scale structure of the universe; the diffuse X-ray background; gravitational lenses, quasars and active galactic nuclei; infrared galaxies; results from infrared astronomical satellites; supernova 1987A; millisecond radio pulsars; quasi-periodic oscillations in the X-ray flux of low-mass X-ray binaries; and gamma-ray bursts

High-energy spectroscopic astrophysics by Steven M Kahn( )

21 editions published in 2005 in English and Undetermined and held by 720 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"After three decades of intense research in X-ray and gamma-ray astronomy, the time was ripe to summarize basic knowledge on X-ray and gamma-ray spectroscopy for interested students and researchers ready to become involved in new high-energy missions. This volume exposes both the scientific basics and modern methods of high-energy spectroscopic astrophysics. The emphasis is on physical principles and observing methods rather than a discussion of particular classes of high-energy objects, but many examples and new results are included in the three chapters as well."--Jacket
Growing black holes : accretion in a cosmological context : proceedings of the MPA/ESO/MPE/USM joint astronomy conference held in Garching, Germany, 21-25 June 2004 by Andrea Merloni( )

21 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 449 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Supermassive black holes are now believed to play an important role in the evolution of the Universe. Every respectable galaxy hosts in its center a black hole that appears to regulate the growth of the galaxy itself. In this book, leading experts in the field review the most recent theoretical and observational results on the following topics: * formation and growth of the first black holes in the Universe and their role in the formation and evolution of galaxies * the physics of black-hole accretion and the production of relativistic jets * binary black-hole mergers and gravitational radiation. Theoretical work is supplemented by the most recent exciting results from space and ground based observatories. This volume is useful research and reference tool for the entire astrophysical community

Lighthouses of the universe : the most luminous celestial objects and their use for cosmology : proceedings of the MPA/ESO/MPE/USM Joint Astronomy Conference held in Garching, Germany, 6-10 August 2001 by MPA/ESO/MPE/USM Joit Astronomy Conference( Book )

9 editions published between 2001 and 2011 in English and held by 154 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The book reviews the present status of understanding the nature of the most luminous objects in the Universe, connected with supermassive black holes and supermassive stars, clusters of galaxies and ultraluminous galaxies, sources of gamma-ray bursts and relativistic jets. Leading experts give overviews of essential physical mechanisms involved, discuss formation and evolution of these objects as well as prospects for their use in cosmology, as probes of the intergalactic medium at high redshifts and as a tool to study the end of dark ages. The theoretical models are complemented by new exciting results from orbital and ground-based observatories such as Chandra, XMM-Newton, HST, SDSS, VLT, Keck, and many others

Jets at all scales : proceedings of the 275th Symposium of the International Astronomical Union held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, September 13-17, 2010 by International Astronomical Union( Book )

4 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 95 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Research on all aspects of jet physics has made dramatic progress in recent years. Numerical simulations, semi-analytical models, and observations across the entire electromagnetic spectrum have shed new light on the formation, collimation, propagation, interaction, and radiation of astrophysical jets on all scales. The proceedings of IAU Symposium 275 present an up-to-date account of our current knowledge of jets and outflows in different astronomical situations, covering a vast range of phenomena, from protostellar jets up to extragalactic jets. Reviews by the leading scientists in the field set the context for lively discussions and contributed papers on the most varied aspects of jet physics, fostering links between these usually disparate areas"--Page 4 of cover

Selected works of Yakov Borisovich Zeldovich by Â. B Zelʹdovič( )

9 editions published in 1992 in English and held by 18 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Selected Works of Ya. B. Zeldovich is a two-volume collection of over 100 articles spanning half a century of work by the late Soviet scientist Yakov Borisovich Zeldovich. The breadth and depth of Zeldovich's work is staggering. Author of over twenty books and more than 500 scientific articles, he made fundamental contributions in chemical catalysis and kinetics, combustion and the hydrodynamics of explosive phenomena, nuclear chain reactions and nuclear energy, the physics of elementary particles, and the large-scale structure of the universe and cosmology. The importance of this collection lies not only in its documentary value as a collection of key scientific works by a man whose genius was characterized by the Soviet physicist Andrei Sakharov as "probably unique." Zeldovich himself considered his most valuable role to be that of a teacher, to convey to young scientists the how of science. The author of several excellent textbooks on topics ranging from elementary mathematics to advanced methods of mathematical physics, he saw this collection of works, enlarged from the original Russian edition, as a contribution to that end. Here one can see the scientific method at work--and all the enthusiasm, the breakthroughs, and the mistakes associated with real scientific endeavor. Commentaries by the author and the editors are included with each paper serving to enhance both the historical and the pedagogical value of this edition. Originally published in 1992. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These paperback editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905
