Assessment and treatment of school-age language disorders : a resource manual by Rita C Naremore( Book )

5 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 162 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book is a practical compendium of assessment instruments and intervention ideas for school-based speech-language pathologists who are eager to take their practice beyond traditional language tests and caseload concerns. The manual focuses on three areas of language where language-impaired children in elementary school need particular help: phonological awareness, narrative skills, and advanced literacy skills (identifying and stating the main idea, for example). Inside, the reader will find non-standardized assessment tasks, sample intervention activities, sample goals and objectives, and sample lesson plans. These tools provide a framework onto which the clinician can graft activities and materials appropriate for individual children. This is a practical, reality-based book of assessment tasks and intervention ideas. It will also provide ideas for helping children who lack these abilities, for writing appropriate goals and objectives and for sharing information about the child's progress with teachers and parents."--Jacket

Teachers' judgments of children's speech; a factor analytic study of attitudes by Rita C Naremore( Book )

7 editions published between 1969 and 1971 in English and held by 11 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This study investigated the judgmental reactions of 33 white and Negro inner city teachers to speech samples of 40 boys and girls who differed in social status and ethnic background. Teachers were asked to make candid responses on a set of semantic differential scales designed to determine (1) the extent to which teachers can be grouped together in terms of their common attitudes toward children's speech and (2) the extent to which groups of teachers can be contrasted and compared with each other in terms of teacher characteristics, child characteristics, rating scale characteristics, and selected characteristics of children's speech. The teachers were grouped--using factor analytic techniques--according to four types of attitudinal responses to children's speech. These four types were divided, both within and between types, roughly along lines of the teacher's race. The teacher types differed in the kinds of judgments made and in the accuracy of those judgments when responding to the speech samples of different types of children. (Author/JM)

Teacher Differences in Attitudes Toward Children's Speech Characteristics by Rita C Naremore( Book )

1 edition published in 1970 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Data from 33 teachers, responding on 12 semantic differential scales to 80 speech samples from 16 different kinds of children, were collected in a study of teacher evaluation of children's speech as related to race, sex, social status of the child, and topic of discourse, as well as to teacher race. A factor analysis was accomplished by use of a form of inverted matrix factor analysis. On the basis of this study it can be concluded that teachers can be grouped into four types on the basis of their attitudinal responses to children's speech. The types are found divided, both between and within type, roughly along lines of teacher race. Pronounciation deviations and pausal phenomena are correlatives of the subjective ratings for all teacher types, but teacher types differ roughly along lines of race, in the correlations between subjective judgments and qualitative versus quantitative variables in the children's speech. This suggests that we could serve the future teachers in our schools best by making clear to them their own attitudes--toward the students in the inner-city or rural school, and toward the language these students are likely to be using.
